That's kinda what I was hoping for. Without ammo, a gun is just a club that rusts.

Yeah but what can you carry on your person if you have to abandon your location? Are your homes fireproof? It will be easier for looters to simply burn you out than to have an ongoing gun battle with you.

All of it I hope. It's all packed and ready inside the airtight/watertight steel box. I can barely lift it though. It's heavy, but I could get it in my truck quickly if I had to bugout.

When the big cat. 4 hurricane hit here in '04 I had about two hours notice (it was supposed to pass us and hit 100 miles north of here) and took all of my guns except some cheapies that I left in the safe, along with about 480 rounds loaded in mags for the sks and Ak. Two mags each loaded for the .40 and 38 super and 5 mags for the .45, plus more ammo in a big duffle including shotgun ammo and .22 ammo.

We (my wife and I) loaded all that plus food, water, clothes, batteries, camp stove, fuel, lanterns, 1st aid kit, family photo albums, etc in about 30 min. Of course, everything was prepositioned so it went quickly.

As far as on my person, on foot, I could carry 300 for each bugout rifle loaded in mags and a few hundred of pistol ammo in my pack. More if on horseback. Of course during the hurricane we just let the horses out in the pasture. Somehow they made it through just fine. I'll never know how though.

I also have friends and family in other places who think ahead, just in case I have to leave stuff behind.

12 gauge 100 rounds Heavy bird shot and about 25 rounds of 00 buck 3" and 15 00 in standard

    38 special 550 fmj 50 JHP

9mm 300 or so round fmj and about 150 JHP

22lr about 700 or so target rounds and 150 CCI stingers with the gold dot HP

    Also have

a 30# small crossbow with 35-40 light-medium duty bolts (plastic/aluminum target head) and 10 heavy duty bolts (solid tempered steel, broad head)

all the parts (currently dis assembled) to make a (aproximate pull weight)75# heavy crossbow with 20-30 heavy duty bolts. (hardwood, broadhead)

My thinking is that in an extended senario ammuntion can get scarce, however arrows/bolts can be easily resused (or remade) for game purposes at the very least. They are also silent as a whisper on the moon which can come in handy for many reasons.

If I am forced out in the woods during such a senario to gather food, last thing I want is people to know I am there. Gun shots can travel a long ways, and depending on the senario perhaps too far.

My signature gives indication of what I believe about ammo.
I keep a running written count of -
    a. Ammo on hand and goals.
    b. Guns on hand and goals.
    c. Accessories on hand and goals.
    d. Parts kits on hand and goals.
    e. Manuals for the guns on hand and goals.
    f. Magazines and clips on hand and goals.
