If I can walk away I will. If I'm cornered I will face my adversary and prepare myself for a physical confrontation. I will not respond to any verbal barrage other than to say "just let it go".
If my adversary wants to Cha Cha, then vato, we get it on. The decision will be his but the victory will be mine.

Letting someone provoke you into a fight says more about you than it does about about them. It always take a bigger person to walk away from an altercation. Once you let them provoke you, you've already lost.

Most, here, would prefer to avoid a fight if possible. Keep in mind one thing, though. It's not always possible. Turn your back, and you can get attacked quickly for the "diss." BTDT. As violent as attacks are getting these days, it's hard to take anything for granted, including the opportunity to simply and casually walk away. That's more frequently an option not offered up by the violent scumbags doing the attacking. What says most about me is: whether I come home at night safely, however that's done. I'll do it peaceably if at all possible ... but I'll do it, no matter the cost to the BG.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.

reduce the number of victims?

Walk away...keep your distance....do not allow them to get into your personal space. What if they produce a knife? or a sap?....things that are easily concealed that you aren't aware of and cannot observe.
As said previously, suck it up and take the verbal abuse--plus, you can't argue with a fool---others won't know the difference.
Now I'm not saying you should accept a beat-down--no way--if you are in the losing side of the physical arguement (not based on size), I'd say you would be justified in producing your weapon and use your best judgment from there. Also know that *IF* you draw, you had better be ready to shoot. Call 911 and then a lawyer.
