    Had a close one yesterday

Haven't been around the forum much lately but then I have had a grand total of one day off in the last 5 weeks as well. At any rate, Yesterday I came home for lunch to see my wife for a few minutes. Open the door to leave and wife is escorting me out, yes I'm carrying.

Over the fence about 30 feet away is a guy running with several police close behind. He's trying to clear the fence and his only route after that is going to be through us. I turned to push in wife and secure door and I heard the Tazer go off and he's on the ground. The things that went through my mind was I was faced with a bunch of very bad choices if this guy turned out to be looking for hostages or violence. If I had had to draw I had zero clear shoot lanes as LEO's are close behind and this is a heavy residential area full of people. My wife, being handicapped, could not do more than retreat into the motor home a step since she can't run. If I had gone lateral to open up a better shot that would have left her exposed and unprotected. Thank God they nailed him.

Lessons learned are again, never ever let that guard down. This is in a "peaceful area" that seems to be becoming less peaceful each year. Always be armed, period. I was but this just reinforces that idea. Another is sometimes you're going to have to choose between a lot of bad options very quickly and without warning. If this guy had kept coming and was armed I would have probably had to hold for a contact distance shot and not miss or I was going to hit a good guy, something I don't want to live with.

All I found out was he had just tried to rob a guy on the street a block away and the victim had resisted forcefully and escaped him. At the same moment a passing LEO had seen it and responded and the guy took off. Following the initial response I think most of the shift showed up in the next 2 minutes! I never got an answer as to how he had been armed.

Keep your guard up out there folks.

Unfortunatley...it seems to be getting that way everywhere.

I do feel that one thing we should all avoid is assumption re ''safe areas''. It can lull us into a sense of (possibly) false security.

I'm not tho suggesting hyped up paranoia - just a good steady yellow even if normally things are seemingly predictably stable. The thread's case is typical perhaps of what could go down almost anywhere these days.

My area crime is like many semi rural areas I expect - some petty theft, vanadalism, drugs of course ...... but for most part not too bad. That said - there have been instances of scams, further away some home invasions and not too far away either, a recent string of store armed hold-ups (perp now apprehended).

The potential is there - and so it seems worth bearing this in mind. I expect some might laugh as I scan going out to mailbox - the quiet roadway is usually deserted!

    Good job for the deputies!

You gotta know the same thing is going through their minds - "Oh, crap, this dirtbag is gonna grab a hostage. Damned if I am gonna let him do that...."

+1! Hats off to the boys in blue! Or brown...or black...or whatever they're wearing. Well done!!

My $0.02--If the BG does close the distance, quarter away from him so you can draw discreetly (and quickly) and put two in his belly at point blank, downward angle (pelvis shot might actually work well here to put him straight on the deck).

Well, these were the local force in blue. While we are basically getting absorbed by a large city we still have the local police force and short response times, thankfully!

As a civilian most of the issues I've found myself involved in were totally unexpected. One of my big concerns is to find myself in the middle of an armed robbery while being an innocent customer at a convenience store or fast food. Not too along ago I was walking across a hospital parking lot, a patrol car was cutting through and had to wait on us to pass. I didn't know it at the time but they were looking for someone and had spotted him, but waited for us to pass. Then he popped out of his patrol car, gun drawn and confronted this guy. He had the guy at gunpoint on the ground, and he had gotten out of his car so fast that it was still in drive creeping away. About 30 seconds later the parking lot had about 10 patrol cars and a dog. Who would have known? It was early evening....... but you never know !

Too bad they didn't use the 'permanent taser'.
Just proves how the bad stuff never happens when you would EXPECT it to...

    ElCruisr...Greetings,
    How goes the 'project'?

Wow, glad you and the missus are ok. Guess this is a good reminder to start looking out the window before exiting the residence.

    Hey E,

Great to hear from you, but not with such a close call.

    Glad you are both okay.

did you word that right? like he was armed but you didn't know how, or did you mean you never did find out if he was armed?

All we could find out was he had attempted an armed robbery up the street. Don't know if it was knife, club, can opener or mini gun. However the officers didn't seem to be retrieving a gun off of him unless he tossed it up the street. In those few seconds I didn't have time to ask him!

My wife continues on about the same thanks, we take each day as it comes.

The future home/boat rebuild is going very slowly as I CAN"T GET A BLASTED DAY OFF! Now things could be worse like having no work but I'd sure like some help with things as we're buried and employees are darned hard to find. Well, that are worth hiring.....
