    Exclamation Situational Awareness

    Apparently mine needs some work.
My '01 F150 started running rough, the service engine light came on so I stopped by an auto parts place to have them check the codes. The 'tech' couldn't get the code reader to work so he went back inside. I was looking under the dash at the connection and suddenly realized someone was there. I turned around and there was this wild-eyed Hispanic guy. I have no idea where he came from; didn't see him when I left the store. In one hand he had a piece of half-eaten chicken, the other hand was empty.
Anyway, there I was, between the open door and the truck, he was blocking any exit. He was talking excitedly in Spanish and waving his arms.
    I said "No habla"
He paused for a second then said "Dollar? you have dollar?"
I said "NO" and un-did the bottom button on my shirt. (I was wearing an un- tucked long sleeve shirt over a T shirt, PT145 on my right side)
He gave me a look and walked away. He then spied a car pulling into the parking lot and started waving at them and yelling in Spanish.
Glad he didn't pull a knife or something, real glad I didn't have to pull my gun.
I'm a child of the 60's, but I got over it.

I believe you meant to say "no hablo". Spanish verb endings are everything.

Are you sure it wasn't an American of Mexican descent?

Just kidding. Good thing it was chicken. I'm glad you're ok.

    Glad nothing happened...
I can remember a time or two before I had my permit when I would have someone next to me in a parking lot asking for money, and I did not see them approaching...that doesn't happen now...I have eyes in the back of my head...when I'm with my wife, we're both looking!

I didn't mean to be taken seriously. Sorry if you missed my poor attempt at humor.

The guy must have been broke after spending his last dollar at KFC.

The proper response is "Get a job, you dirtbag". I am out of patience with panhandlers.

Yep, concerning situational awareness. If you looked up and "he was there" then you didn't have any.
It's tough to be aware of what is going on around us at all times. Especially when we get involved in things that require a good degree of concentration.

    Glad everything worked out OK.

I've got alot of experience with these guys, and it's not a good idea to make these guys mad. You may feel that they're not much of a threat because of their social status, but that actually makes them more of a threat, especially if a gas station or store you frequent is also a hangout for them.

These guys have all the time in the world to scope you out and get their revenge. The next time you spend 2 minutes in a gas station for a slurpie, you may return to a car with a smashed windshield.
