I agree with what everyone said, hopefully my gf would hit the guy but maybe the loud bang would be enough to get and edge . That or im getting real dirty and gouging eyes out.

Dogs! They don't need to be huge and attack trained. Medium sized well loved family pets will give their lives for you.

do we know if the rifle was the home owners turned against him or the intruders?
It doesn't sound like he implemented a safe room or an action plan in case of this situation...that is too bad...
I would hope my wifes survival instincts would kick in a she would point blank him and save me...

Something just doesn't sound right here. Perhaps the wife was just a sound sleeper, but with her son being shot downstairs and her husband being in a fight for his life upstairs, seems something would have alerted her to a problem.

Personally, they are getting no warning from me. You don't break into someones house, day or night, to discuss the weather or latest sports scores. I'm assuming they are armed and mean my wife I harm. As soon as I see them, I'm firing. Their only welcoming will be Federal HST 230gr JHP's. As many as needed to convince them they have made a very bad mistake.

I also wonder if it was the perps rifle/shotgun or the homeowners...

Also, don't be too sure you'll wake up if a gun discharges in your house. Once, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, an aquaintance of mine discharged a .380 in my VERY small house. It hit the stud of a wall in between the room it was fired in and a bedroom (and was stopped there). There was a person sleeping in that bedroom, with their head against the wall that the round struck. They slept through it. I was sleeping about 20' away from the discharge, in another room, and I slept through it, as did the other person in my bed. I'm not an extremely light sleeper, but neither am I dead to the world, so I was very surprised that NONE of us woke up.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

My wife would call 911 and then hit the B/G with my baton, long enough time for me to get to my pistol and try to hold him at bay till the Police comes if he still wants to fight when a .45 is inches away from him he deserves to die and will.

No Wife, but my Niece would probably decapitate him with a sword.
