Depending on how busy the hotel is, some minor repairs or cleanups might be done at night as long as they don't make noise. Some other times they are getting stuff from a room to take to another (fridges, roll away beds, etc) because it is easier. Other times is a screw up from Front Desk where somebody inputed the wrong code and shows a room that is vacant and dirty (and must be readied) and in reality is occupied. If the tag the room Vacant and Clean, then you get people getting checked into your room. There was one time I was taking a report in a room that was trashed by springbreakers and I see a family walking in. Some idiot at the Front Desk had set the room as Vacant and Cleant instead of Out Of Order.
One thing you can do to avoid accidental walk-ins is to use your Do No Disturb card. People will think twice about trying to access and NO EMPLOYEE should even knock at your door unless there is an emergency.

I think the next time I fly, I'm going to carry a walking cane; I understand they are perfectly legal on planes.
Master Mark Shuey Sr. has a cool website on cane techniques. www.Canemasters.com. Yes, even a combat cane is legal to carry on an airplane.

Some of the best cheap security you can take on a vacation are the cheap rubber door stops you get at Wally World. Shove two under the door and one or two into the door jamb. Locks 'em up tighter than a virgin's legs on prom night.
