Looking for a driveway alert system

i am looking for a driveway alert system for my parents, who live in a rural area with a long driveway.
my problem is that the house is maybe 800-900 ft from the end of the driveway, where i want the sensor.
anyone know of a long range system that wont cost me an arm and a leg? im looking for under $80 here for sure

if you dont know what im talking about. something like this:
    http://www.builderdepot.com/browse.i...odstoreid=4034

You likely can't build one yourself for under $80. That one you have a link to---is the range not far enough? You may be able to use it and boost the signal somehow?

I've thought about doing something like that before using a couple of photoeyes (emitter and receiver), run on 12v from the house with a doorbell transformer and thermostat wiring with a little buzzer inside. One could put a timing relay in the circuit to thwart false alarms like blowing debris and such. I wouldn't have as much voltage drop as an 800 foot run though.

    Check out:

Good luck finding anything worthwhile under $80 - especially for the distance you're talking about. I tried a cheaper model from "something"-Mart. It was junk. I decided to spend the extra $$, but found a good deal on eBay directly from Miltronics. I haven’t regretted it since.

When you're talking about 'safety', isn't that worth a lot more that $80?

Try a search for Dakota Driveway alerts. They have models that will accomodate your range, although I think they are more $ than you are thinking about.

I know you've found one online, but in the event you need to look into driveway alarms in the future, Progressive Farmer did some testing/rating on them about two years ago? I recall that they had a really long range one, maybe up to 1000 feet.

And who comes down the driveway when their plans aren't going to be to your benifit? It's usually only after they have control that a vehicle is brought up.

I had a professionly installed drive way alarm installed over 15 years ago at our rural home. There is a magnetic sensor buried in the drive about 400' from the house and about 100' from the road. Sets an alarm off in the house and with 600watts of accessory output powers up 4 flood lights, 2 on the barn and 2 on the house, aimed to shine in the eyes of who approaches. I thought about getting an old cop car and have it set off the bubble gum machine too but then I would have to get a robot cop and have him raise his arm to eat a donut and that would be too much work. Anyway, the alarm works great! Many times over the years strange cars have drivin in to see what is back here and when those lights come on they reverse real fast. Cost about 600. istalled back then but worth every cent.
I also hav have mass quanities of motion sensor lights to take on anything moving on foot. If a car drives all the way up the house and set everything off it looks like a night game at the ball park. Very effective.

    http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w..._534844_534844
its long range. works great. my parents love it
only thing it doesnt have that i would like is volume control.
although the volume it is set at is just right.
    A- rating from me
