Police: Gun drawn in road-rage case

A man was arrested Tuesday in what Tallahassee police are describing as a road-rage incident.

Dennis Howard Leathem, 57, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, said David McCranie, spokesman for the Tallahassee Police Department.

Leathem and the victim, a 36-year-old man, were driving east on Apalachee Parkway when Leathem cut the man off, McCranie said.

Angered, the man gave Leathem the middle finger, he said. They honked their horns at each other.

But it didn't stop there, McCranie said. Leathem followed him onto Capital Circle and into the parking lot of Honey Baked Ham. The two began arguing, and Leathem poked the man in the chest. Leathem pulled out a gun, and the man called 911.

Leathem drove away, but the man took down his tag number. Leathem later turned himself in to the Police Department. The gun he brandished and another gun he had in the car were impounded.

"He admitted he'd done it," McCranie said.

Road rage has declined significantly in Tallahassee over the years, McCranie said.

"I think people realize the danger of that kind of activity," he said.

Officers use unmarked police cars to watch for aggressive driving, such as speeding, cutting cars off, tailgating and running red lights.

"What we try to do is to combat that before it gets to that level," said Officer Zach Lyne, who works in TPD's traffic unit.

Like you said, that’s NOT good for CCL holders.

With our ever growing population, work conditions being aggravated due to the economy, road rage will likely increase. All we can do as CCL holders is make sure we are not the aggressor, and reframe from “hand signals”.

I don't see any indication that he holds a CWL. If he did, I'm guessing that it would have been prominent in the article.

    Small consolation though......

He's in a world of hurt now.

The Aggravated Assault charge, when a firearm is involved, carries a 3 year minimum mandatory prison term.

We've had a few instances of that on the highways around here. I've witnessed first hand how things can escalate once someone pulls over to the side of the road and stops. Best not to ever make eye contact with other drivers, or honk, or anything that will make matters worse. Some idgets just seem to look for reasons to get upset. I've seen drivers with their whole family in the vehicle get into some predicaments before. I still fail to understand the thought process behind crap like that. I think all vehicle ought to have a 'mood' light in the rear window. Peace or nuclear. That way certain things could be avoided.

Looks like he'll be with LeRoy for 3 years. Very very dumb move.

This is so stupid, road rage that is..these morons (bad drivers) are only in your life for abt 30 seconds or more and then they are gone...just because someone pulls out in front of me, cutting me off, giving me the "Kalifornia howdy" with the out stretched middle finger does not warrent me pulling a weapon out.

A jack ass like that deserves what he gets and shouldn't be allow to own a gun, much less carry one. He won't be able to own one after his court date.

He had a lot of chances to de-escalate. He chose to follow the other guy, confront him, poke him in the chest, and pull a gun.

This guy needs some serious anger-management improvement. I hope he wises up before he returns to society.

What a knucklehead. Being armed actually makes me more passive in situations like that. I know what I have in my holster and I know why I have it. It's not to confront anyone or be a bad a**. 99.9% of all confrontations are avoidable with little to no effort.
