Just going through my handgun carry permit class, this is fresh on my mind. First, you are liable for every round that leaves the chamber, shooting randomly could lead to bad things for you or to someone else you never intended to harm. Second, if you shoot a warning shot, in the 'general' direction of him, he could have interpreted that as you using 'lethal force against him' therefore he would have the right to respond with the same 'lethal force' you directed towards him. Basically saying, a warning shot could start a gun fight. Although the average domestic gun fight is about 3 seconds, a lot of 'unnecessary' things happen.

If I'm going to fire live rounds, they are going to neutralize the scum interrupting my space.

Perhaps only if I happened to be in an isolated area where I was very sure I would not hit an innocent person. There was a story last summer of some guys terrorizing campers in the Boundary Waters area from a canoe. I may have fired a warning shot into a tree to scare them away but that would be about the only time.

I can't think of an instance where a warning shot would be acceptable. I liken the warning shot to the failed logic of someone thinking they can shoot a gun out of the badguy's hand. If i have drawn my weapon i have already established the factors necessary for lethal force.

Warning shot sounds like a good way to go to jail.

You didn't feel threatened enough to engage the threat, so why are you shooting at all?

Besides, where is that round going?

    +1 for Real bad idea...

Warning shots only work in the movies, and you have now exposed your self to the BG giving away any tactical advantage you had.

No warning shots for the above stated reasons. Also if you have an auto, the first shot is also your most reliable.

the warning shot would be the first shot aimed at center mass....and if he continues to advance, I will fire another warning shot....center mass.....

The warning shots are telling the BG that another shot is on the way....stop now, if you dont want to get hit again....

Warning shots are specifically prohibited (for good reason) by my agency, and I wouldn't fire one in almost any circumstance that I can think of even if they were allowed.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

The only warning shot they get is if I jerked the trigger and the shot was off. they get the warning another is on the way. I only draw the gun if I feel my life or the life of another is in danger. If I draw my intent is to fire not scare. if they deescalate by dropping their weapon and run away and my reaction time is good I may not fire. If they have no weapon but leave there is no need to fire, just report to the police. No warning shots.
