Real scenario, what would have you done?

So the other day I am walking in the walkway one casino to the other (from the Luxor to the Mandalay Bay, for the locals) you know nite time everybody is either high or drunk.
That overpass-walkway is kinda dead the shops are closed it's let's say about 20 yards wide.

I am 6'2" /190lbs well built....I have my 45 on me and an extra ten round mag and a spyderco endura as well.

I am walking on the middle-right side, on the left (they were kinda covered) suddenly two those types you know pants hanging down, bandanas gang banger type, apparently drunk too, spotted me. They were both taller and heavier then me and I was already out numbered.
Next thing is they coming at me one telling the other "kick his @ss."
Coming from left my 11 o'clock, wall is almost next to me my 3 o'clock and they are closing in...

I think there was a girl with them sitting on a bench on the side, or they were just bugging that person too.
Remember, they were kinda hidden and in a split sec the show was on.

So what would you have done?

Same as above, but I'd yell "PLEASE STOP" (think of what else it sounds like) several times to get as much attention as I could.

+1. They've communicated their clear intent.

If you have to shoot under those circumstances, your life's gonna be a mess for a long time if they don't have any weapons though. I really hope they aren't too drunk to exercise at least a little common sense at the sight of the business end of a .45....

I would attempt a retreat – Loud voice use as well.
If I could not get to safety & they chased after me & an attack was going to happen I would draw & attempt a 2nd retreat if possible.
I'd hate to draw and & they all draw as well.
Thats why I would attempt move fast out of the kill zone.

I couldn't quite visualize if retreat was possible from your description but if it is I would attempt that first.

i would try to run away and if that didnt work i would have to fight a kick to the groin or a chop to the wind pipe for the first guy(hand to hand fighting against multiple people you drop them as fast as you possibly can) then concentrate on the other guy or flee if i could....im a lot bigger than you and advanced in mixed martial arts so 2 on 1 doesnt bother me so much(as long as no one pulls a gun of course lol) but thats what i would do...my instructors teach only fight as a last possible resort and if you do have to fight, fight dirty and end it fast and get out of there.

If no retreat is allowed I would yell stop as I turn to face them. I would also yell, "Do not come any closer!" (You have to set up witnesses for your day in court, if you know what I mean)


I would then get ready for a draw as I once again yell out for all to hear, “Stop, stay away from me! I don’t want any trouble!” I would draw down on them at this point because I just know that they will not stop coming toward you. How do I know? I work in a jail as a deputy and see, talk and fight these types all the dam time!


Do not loss you nerve because they won’t! I got in a fight once at work will a SOB who tried his best to kill me. I walked away from that fight with some broken ribs, a torn right shoulder and my eyes ALMOST ranked from my head! And I won the FIGHT! Never go into a fight thinking that you won't get hurt. Always think of walking away with the least injuries.


I told the DA that if I had a DAM gun on me at the time I would have shot the SOB!


Never turn your back to these types. Always GIVE COMMANDS THAT OTHER PEOPLE CAN HEAR. And be brave. One tactic of these SOBs is to knock you to the ground and then stomp you head a few times so it will bounce off the cement floor (sidewalk). Trust me on this one; I have seen it done a few times! This tactic also breaks the neck and I hate to admitt it but I know a Duputy who had his neck broken this way. Always fight for keeps!

The only rule in a fight is that there isn't any rules!


When I am at stores and I notice or get a worry high alert feeling (you guys know what I mean) I face the person and look them in the eyes for a moment. Telling him without words that I am aware of what is around me.


Because I work in a jail I am always aware of who walks to my rear. If you are in a store and you get that feeling as someone is about to pass you then do what I do. I do not let my back face them. I turn so that I am always facing them as they walk by. As they walk by I just pivot on one foot and follow their body by turning in the direction that they are passing me.


I also raise one hand and place it on my upper chest or to my chin as if thinking. This puts your hand up and ready to block, strike, or push if needed. Looks funny but you will be always ready.

I am also a fighter and have a 5th degree black belt in Hapkido and three lower black belts in other stuff. (I am 52 years old and have been in the Army for over 20 years) I have box in the Army and have studied in fighting and ground work. Started Judo in the 3rd grade and have study in Korea. I am very good at trapping which sounds like you know what I mean. I had taught for years (I don’t teach anymore) and now that I have been in many real fights while working in the jail I have come to a very eye opening conclusion.


I will make people mad, but I will say it anyway. 90% of what is taught in classes doesn’t work! The classic mess…… There is no time for high fancy kicks or complicated moves. When I fight I let my body take over and what I have found is that when the crap hits the fan the BASICS is what you depend on. Simple and direct! As you know who said, “Open your mind and your tools will strike” was 100% correct! LOL


Mixed martial arts is the way to go now. You have made a very, very good choice in learning this type of fighting. We can thank Bruce for this thinking! JDK! After all he set the standard.

+1. Absolutly, just like that. And not a lot of time between verbal command and BANG.

Retreat, or some nice 10% peeper spray, I in my newest Quartermaster cataloger they have some bright colored 10% gel that sticks like glue to the perp kind of like blasting them with something the consistency if Vaseline but is a whole lot more effective.

I agree with Sgt. Mac's response. If you run, you will only give them more confidence and probably trigger a preditor/prey response.

I have heard a story from somewhere, of a shooting because the BG did not stop. Found out later the dead guy couldn’t hear! So he just kept walking and became a dead guy because of his hearing loss.

When giving the Verbal Command also give a Visual Command: Arm Straight Out, palm facing out. This says "Stop" to anyone.

I use it on vagrants as well as my wife.

Dicey, I'd have cleared leather fast. Then evaluate circumstances further.
