A friend of the family was killed by a hammer wielding assailant that had hidden in the back seat of her car. This happened when I was 12 and to this day I try to be very observant to the back seat when I am approaching my vehicle.

In addition to checking your vehicle when you approach it, and of course checking around it, lock the vehicle. Sounds simple, but this guy got into the back seat somehow. The car was unlocked, or he broke in. I suppose it is possible that hatchet wielding psychos carry lock picks and other burglar tools, but unlikely.
