Shootout: Did you see the sights???

I hope I'm not asking a verboten question here.

For those of you who have ever been in a shooting situation:

    1. Did you see your sights?
    2. Were they night/laser sights or plain sights?
    3. What was your hit/miss ratio?

LEO's highly encouraged to reply. Thanks! (I'm not asking for specifics on the situation or looking for "classified" info)

I'm wondering if anyone even sees their sights in a bad situation. Many people spend a lot of money on night/laser sights (myself included) & am curious if the stats are in their favor for getting these items. Thanks!

    1. Did you see your sights? Nope
    2. Were they night/laser sights or plain sights? Standard night sights. Each time I saw nothing but triangle of my target. (chest width to nose) Even in simulated gun fights using FOF equipment, nobody ever sees or even uses the laser when equipped with one.
    3. What was your hit/miss ratio? On average its about 40-50% in a fight; My "best" was fired 6, hit 5. I suspect the miss was the first shot. Those who don't or cant instinctive shoot, their ratio's are much worse.

    Hope that answers your questions.

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I'm looking for. I figured the above examples were the "norm" but wanted to hear from people that have actually been there.

What is the typical max distance for instinctive/point shooting? I'm thinking somewhere around 10 yards.

Thats a decent baseline, but I've seen guys that are really good go beyond 25 yds to show off, but at that distance, you really dont need the speed of point shooting anyway.

I can do 15 or 20 on a good day, but ten and under is pretty typical.

    1. Did you see your sights?

Nope, it was dark. Strictly point and shoot.

    2. Were they night/laser sights or plain sights?

Plain, but it would not have mattered...
there was no time to be looking at sights.

    3. What was your hit/miss ratio?

Fired twice. 1 in heart, 1 missed.

I suspected this was the case; I'm very curious as to how those Sure Sight triangular sights might change this, or if they do at all.

    note to self:
use $150 reserved for night sites on extra ammo, targets, and range time for extra practice on instinctive shooting

    +1

I have not been in an actual shooting (hope is stays that way), and am still working on simulated stress.

    Point shoot,

    OEM 3 dot sights

4 out of 5 average in COM from normal carry to fire (I too suffer from first shot grazing the left edge) with both my airsoft and carry, single to three targets, various range and movement. Range out to 25ft. Beyond that I do use the sights and take a bit more time in firing.

    1. Yes
    2. Both red dot and plain iron sights
    3. No clue. I can say that when I used my sights I got hits; when I did not I missed.

    1. No.

    2. Plain sights.

    3. 100%.

I'm deeply suspicious concerning the utility of fancy/expensive handgun sights. They simply do not fit into the experiences I've had or those of some of my friends. There may be actual situations in which lasers or night sights were absolutely necessary, but I've never been in one.
The Edge ... there's no honest way to describe it. The only ones who know where it is have gone over.
