I would prefer the shotgun. For me it's easier to aim, easier to control, and sends a lot more lead at the target.

It's not because of over-penetration. At this point I'm not real worried about over-penetration. I would hate to have a ricochet hit a neighbor's house or Heaven-forbid, a neighbor, but lets be a little bit realistic. If I have 5 armed BG's shooting at me with whatever they are using, you can bet they aren't going to be concerned about over-penetration or ricochets. Also, most studies show that their are more missed shots in a gunfight than COM shots, and yet the magic bullet that ricochets, passes through a target, or misses, and goes on to hit an innocent bystander, is relatively rare. Is it possible? Sure. But at 2 a.m. standing at the top of a staircase doing my best impression of Scarface is probably not the best time to limit your options in firepower.

The other reason I prefer the shotgun is that a shotgun is just about a universally accepted method of defending your home. The media and the DA are not going to question using a shotgun nearly as much as using an AK. I'm afraid that the EBR's are not exactly known as defensive weapons.

If I run out of shotgun ammo, or cannot get to it for some reason, you better believe I'll use anything I can get my hands on. From a 30.06 to a 30-30 to an AK.
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.

As long as it's legal to use, I don't worry about it.

#17, Duk, bystanders that get killed by defenders are supposed to be charged to the people committing the felony, although that might vary by jurisdiction.

I don't recall the defender killing any bystanders, though. Does anyone have a cite on it happenning?

I agree with what most of the others are saying. I hunt with my shotgun, so I can tell a jury that I just grabbed my "huntin' gun". How do you explain to a jury the need to have an AK-47? You can't hunt with it! (At least not in Ohio) Not to mention that I live in the burbs and AK rounds would be passing through 2 or 3 other houses and taking out some innocents. At least with a shotgun the possibility of your neighbor getting shot is slim.

I keep saying, "what would a jury think?" How often do you guys think about the legality of using a gun? Even drawing the damn thing can get you arrested in most cases. I look at drawing my gun as an instant ticket to jail. I'm going to make damn sure that the only reason I ever draw it is to save mine or somebody else's life. That would be worth going to jail for.

That's the only reason anyone should draw/use their weapon.

If you carry in Condition 3, you have two empty chambers. One in the weapon...the other between your ears.
