    Rack the slide?

Ok it's 3 am and you wake to hear a window breaking downstairs and you are sure you have an intruder. Do you give the intruder the "slide" warning by racking your shotgun loudly hoping to deter him? Or do you maintain the tactical advantage of silence and not give up your position?
    Discuss.
It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.

"Maintain tactical advantage of silence." Even if you don't have the advantage of silence (really creaky floors), the advantage that the intruder does not know you have a weapon may still be handy. Knowledge is power.

I question is pretty broad. Do you have a reason to move through the house and secure your children, or are you going to barricade yourself in the bedroom? That would make a deference to me.

However you play it in your head the question is still...Do you warn the intruder with a slide rack?

From my stand point. Racking the slide is a good idea. If you had to defend yourself in court after a shooting situation, it would be nice to be able to say I verbally instructed the intruder to leave and I racked my shotgun to let him know that I meant it. Not that you really need to do any of those in your own home, it just looks better to a jury.

My option would be to secure the area as quickly and silently as possible and to take up a tactical position where I could monitor all all entrances and egresses from the family area. Don't want to be chasing ghosts and leave the family vulnerable from unprotected areas.

If I stay put I don't rack it. If I move throughout the house, then I rack the slide before leaving the room.

I would consider this only after locating and identifying the threat and being in a superior offensive position from which I could not be surprised. Otherwise having the bad guy know where I am and that I am armed without my knowing exactly where he is and possibly how many there are and if they are armed is a strike against me.

Depends a lot on whether you have a loaded chamber.

Chambered and ready, flip the safety off and the rest is history. Why? What else would you do?
