A friend of mine posted a quote from the Joker recently and I think this fits well for us and why we discuss scenarios and what if situations.
"Nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying."
I think this fits well with the "what if" thinking, if we are thinking "what if" then when something does happen not only are we not surprised but we are not panicked because we have planned for X and even though this is Y they are similar enough to be able to adapt to it.
I understand what you are saying and no matter how many what if's you go through in your mind there in no way to replicate a real SD situation and what takes place withing your body. This is why resrving the draw to muscle memory is so vital as well as COM shots on several different targets, practice, practice, practice, but it will never be exactly like the real deal, but you will be much better off if you have spent the time in training.

I agree with NCHornet.
While you can't be prepared for every contingency, it's always good to practice. As a pilot, we always practice what to do when the SHTF, that way, it's (almost) routine.
It should be the same with firearms. Practice at home with an EMPTY firearm. then go to the range and practice some more.
In a crisis you will revert to your training. Make sure you have training. Make sure your training is good.
