Stampede!
Thinking of the recent Wal-Mart stampede that killed a man, what would you do it there was a large hoard of people running towards you screaming (no, not zombies)? Keep in mind that there is no where to go; even running from them would only get you a few seconds before you were overtaken.
Gun control can be blamed in part for allowing 9/11 to happen.

Head for the walls if I am in an enclosed space, wall will offer some cover, and you will only have to worry about people on one side of you. Out in the open, I can not think of a situation that you could not find a street post, tree, trash can, traffic sign, or something to use as cover/support.
If it was a hopeless situation, who knows, I might let some lead fly in the air in hope of changing direction of travel among the hoards.

Okay. In addition, in the event that you were in the process of being trampled, what would you do then?

At this point, I am thinking that it's me or them and I would fight with fist, teeth, and knife before my trampling...I wouldn't draw my pistol, but I would fight to live.

I can't justify even clearing leather as you know these people are just in a frenzy over the sales and not intent on killing you. Even if you felt your life was in danger they have no motive and I'm not sure how it would been seen legally. If you strongly feel a driver of a car just might crash and injure you or similar, you can't just fire on things like that. I would probably make like a wall. Or in this guys sake, not be wherever he was before they stampeded in.
Still a sad story though.
Some of you brought up a good point though in cases of food shortages, riots etc. are much more serious and we can only imagine how many times more ferocious and violent the stampedes would be.

don't think this person had much time to do anything. Probably opened the door, was pushed down, end of story.
(P.S. I'm not making light of this horrible tragedy. Just trying to shed some humor on this joyous holiday season already filled with so much grief)

I was reading one of those "Survive any situation" type books at Half Price Books last week and this was in there, not Wal-Mart but a people stampede.
It showed the person wishing to survive such an event scrambling to stand behind a pillar, I guess you could choose any large object to do so, IF you can make it that far.

I wonder if they were drawing straws to see who had to open the door
