    Went to the mall today

My wife and I were running errands today. We had to go to Park Meadows Mall which one of the larger malls in the Denver area. While I was in there waiting for my wife to finish up, I dawned on me that if I had to shoot or someone was shooting I would not have had a clear and safe shot. It seemed like the only options were to find shelter and hunker down or try to slip out through the delivery area. The mall was not that crowded either.
To take a shot I would have to in very close proximity of the perp. Has anyone ever come up with this conclusion?

Unless someone is directly harming you or a loved one, you are under no obligation to shoot back. Take cover and be safe.

    You bet...

    In the mall...
    In church...
At the local 'stop N rob'...
    At the food mart...
    On a crowded street...
    In traffic...
    And the list goes on...

I would think that if somebody started shooting the place might clear out pretty quickly. that might give you a clear shot.

That's the kind of thing you can't really plan for and, if the fecal material does hit the whirling blades, you will have to be thinking on your feet and very quickly.

IMHO, since (I assume) you are not a LEO, I wouldn't suggest going after the BG unless you are in direct immanent threat. If you accidentally hit an innocent bystander, you would certainly be sued, or even worse. Stay safe, protect yourself and your family.

Agreed EMP, and Jon's point too.

And yes BkCo1, I've come to that conclusion and in fact run with that as my default/first level thought toward _survival_ when I find myself and especially when with my family in some public zone such as stores and shopping plazas.
I always am scanning places new to me for alternative exits (the front door where I came through I almost always immediately right off as an option...that is where the herd of stampeding escapees will go and back up at).
Exits that typically are marked "Employees Only" or "FIRE EXIT" and entries to the stock room, a back office, basement or floor above (restaurants), exterior fire escapes/balcony, or even to the restroom.
Further when I visit a place new to me such as a restaurant or store by long ago learned habit I'll walk the floor (store) or excuse myself to the restroom and as I walk I look for means of alternative egress, and ingress too. And I memorize them and the floor plan.
I do similar same at airports foreign to me and when I board a plane I always count seats from the cockpit back to the exits (all of them within my view) and from there to my own location.
Reason being the last thing you want to be trying to figure out is how to put distance between you and trouble, once trouble is directly in your face...leaving you little time to think muchless figure up a plan.
Do your recon during quiet times and hope that it's a waste of time spent walking and observing. If not though then well it's time and effort well spent.

As to drawing and even thinking of taking _any_ shots, trouble would have to be _directly_ in my face, my families face, or on our six and I'm not talking long shots to the other side of the store either. I mean we can see the whites of his eyes visible and I can smell his stink close.
Anything less than that and ones reasoning toward taking shots as a defense in court amongst other places will in general be difficult to explain, especially if some other innocents happen to find themselves injured.

Since this might start happening around the country soon, first yes E & E if you can but if not, also consider whats behind you. You will probably be drawing fire from them too, move diagonal and try to get a clear, minimal ricochet back stop both behind you and hadji

At least you can carry at your mall. All firearms are at the ones around me. CPZ signs everywhere.

Malls and stores are not designed for defensive situations. Their sole purpose is to lure you in and send you home without your money.

Unless directly involved, or trapped where you can't, gather your family and make for the nearest exit. Remember that your primary job is to protect yourself and family. If trapped inside, take up the best defensive position you can find, and be ready to stop the aggression if the opportunity presents itself, but don't try to seek out the BG.

Of course I would not get involved if gang punks were killing each other, the courts won't get rid of them, let them eliminate each other. But if hadji strikes I believe I would have to attack because they will keep killing till taken out. Having been shot at a few times, I believe a strong counter attack gives better odds then withdrawal or hiding unless your by a door and many hundred feet away from them. I increased my training and range time over the last few years to be able to hit on the move again with confidence. I have known and warned about a Bombay type attack for a long time now, they are just waiting for President Bush to leave office, they know he would do.

In that case, if I am near an exit I'm grabbing the Wife and she will be behind me as I am walking backwards keeping an eye on the direction of the BG and I'll escort as many people out as I can muster together that are not already panicking.

If he is in between me and the door I'll take cover if I can and if I can't I'll take whatever precautions I can to take him out, God willing.

While tactically dangerous, you could consider going down and firing up, to make a clear backstop.
