Question What Should You do if You Get Caught in a Bank Robbery?

I was watching Forensic Files the other day and they were showing an episode where a string of bank robberies were happening somewhere around So. Carolina(I think). I got to thinking that I do some banking probably four or five times a week. What should I do if I'm at a bank when an armed robbery occurs?
I always do my banking with a human teller.

I would be as inconspicuous as possible. Since you are normally talking a minimum of 2 robbers involved in a bank robbery it doesn't make much sense to try and play hero and stop it, besides the bank is insured, let them have the money and be a good LIVE witness. If it escalates to where they start shooting people, then I would draw and hope for the best.

Don't try to be a hero, comply with their demands and be a good witness, unless it becomes a hostage situation, and at some point I know I can get the drop on them, but that there is a big if

Unless people are being shot at, I would just keep a low profile and hope they dont notice me. On the other hand, once someone gets shot, there is no putting the genie back in bottle then. I would just have to do my best against them and I hope I do better.

So far, the answers apply to very black and white situations.

But what happens if the bank robbers tell everyone to lay face down on the floor?

Then they start searching everyone for money, etc?

    Then they find your gun?

At this point, you are relying totally on their mercy not to kill you.

    I don't think I could do that.

If a couple of scumbags enter a bank and start robbing the place, I ain't doing anything. However, if they tell us to lay down on the floor . . . . . . ???

My answer is, I guess I would play it as I saw it. But I don't believe I would ever be able to risk being executed.

That's why I use the drive up unless I absolutely have to go inside.

There have been post about this in the past. I would be the quite guy in the corner watching everything and listening to demands umtil the started searching or putting us/me into a backroom to be executed. Then it is go time

In my city, one of my fellow officers was off-duty and one of our local banks, when two masked gunmen came into the bank and robbed it. He made careful note of any relevant info, called 911, and made an excellent witness. He was armed but decided that two against one were bad odds and made, what I thought, was an excellent decision. In my opinion, unless someone is being executed in front of you, calling 911, and being a good witness is your best option.

Same as the convience store situation(although most banks don't have the cover or concealment of the average, say 7-Eleven!)...be a good witness and ONLY act if the situation becomes a life threatening one. The bank is insured(and their employees are TOLD TO COMPLY)and the odds are the bad guys ONLY want the money and a FAST ESCAPE. Again, the openess of most banks does not lend itself to shooting from cover etc., but like I said before your training(or lack of) will dictate tactics.

Lay low and keep your gun holstered. A gun fight initiated by you could cause a bloodbath. only react if some one were about to die.

What Should You do if You Get Caught in a Bank Robbery?
    Do exactly as told.

    Drop gun on floor.

    Kneel down.

    Raise hands.

Interlock hands behind the head and cross your feet.

DO exactly what the Officer holding the gun on you tells you to do and do not make ANY sudden movements...

I had to chuckle Hotguns...what I was thinking as well. One might just get shot by the good guys.

These are all great scenarios...but if one searched, they will find that they have been played over and over again.

In NC we are not allowed to carry in banks as I guess is the law in many other states. Personally, I don't go into banks if at all possible. I use the drive through and ATMs when I can and there I can carry. Believe me, if I do have to use an ATM I am carrying. ATMs are another problem, it was just last week when a SC woman was robbed and murdered as she used the ATM from her car.

ATMs are like a mouse trap for the BG...just waiting to pounce.

As was said earlier bank employees are trained to comply and let the robber get away as fast as possible. Banks are insured against any money stolen in the robbery. When i worked at a bank we weren't even allowed to trip the alarm until the robber had turned to leave. They didnt want to chance a hostage situation. As much as some people like to think all bank robberies are large loud events the grand, and i repeat grand majority are very quiet and fast. Most the time the only person that knows its happening is the person getting robbed. I second be a good witness and lay low.
