I assisted in stopping a car theft Saturday.
On my way home from BikerRN's house I saw a new Muscle Car on I-10. It was being driven by a young hispanic male with a lot of bling and he was scrunched down low. I didn't pay a lot of attention untill I noticed that he was driving behind semi-trucks and making an effort to stay between trucks. He had more than enough horsepower to get into the left lane and clear the trucks but stayed in a way he would be hidden.
I debated getting involved becaues i didn't want to type-cast a young Hispanic male. I followed, sometimes getting in front of his vehicle, sometimes behind, a lot of traffic so it was easy. We reached the road to Ft. H and he turned off. Since this is the main corridor for stolen vehicles to take to Naco I decided to call DPS and ask them to check the plate.
I used good old ONSTAR which had me connected to DPS in 10 seconds. I gave the DPS person the information and told her that this may be absolutely nothing. She calmly ran the plates and in about 30 seconds called me back and asked if I could watch the car safely until a DPS officer could intercede.
I figured that this might be serious because the plates had been checked and I figured that whoever was driving didn't meet the description of the owner.
I informed them that I was armed, had been a CID agent for some time in the army, and knew how to politely shadow someone. A lot of traffice helped.
Now I have to give big Kudos to the AZ DPS and the Sierra Vista P D. I didn't realize how well they work together.
I followed the car all the way to S Vista passing 2 DPS cars that were situated along the way. We hit H-City and a DPS vehicle got into position between me and the car. We hit the East gate of Ft. H. and a S Vista PD car got behind the vehicle.
I got a phone call telling me thank you, and I sped off.
Today I found out the vehicle had indeed been stolen.

One car owner is happy tonight

Yay! I'm glad it turned out well. It's always a good feeling knowing you helped someone out. I bet the owner of the car was happy that it was located before it got too far away. =)
Only time I assisted in catching a BG was when I got rear ended in my car and the guy sped off! So I followed him and told the dispatcher the tag numbers. Less than 5 minutes later a black and white pulled up where I was saying they found the suspect in his house and had me come ID him. Lakewood PD rocks.

Awesome...Now that's the way to do stuff.
Observe, report, witness, win.
Though no doubt others would have thought to attempt a PIT maneuver on the guy or attempt to shoot out a front tire, because there could've been Lindbergh's kidnapped baby stashed in the trunk (!). :p

The Arizona DPS are serious about stopping car theft as are other LE agencies in this state. Reporting suspicious activity costs you nothing and can really make a difference in the efforts to reduce crime in the state. Thanks for helping the good guys....
