Same thing happened to me as I was driving our Suburban a few years back. Little kids thinking they're funny. I didn't have my paintball gun in the vehicle or I would have returned fire!
On a serious note, the sound of a paintball hitting your vehicle can make quite a "thump" and really startle the driver.
Drive to safety as fast as you can and dial 911. The car is replaceable, your life isn't.
