thought I was being shot at last night...

...as it turns out, it was only fireworks, but MAN did my blood start pumping.

It was about 2 am or so and the wifey and I are sound asleep. We've been sleeping with our windows open since the Colorado nights have been utterly beautiful. We're on the 3rd floor of an apartment in a suburb of Denver. From research I've done, it's a little below national average in terms of crime stats. Anyways...

Out of nowhere we hear these extremely loud BANG BANG BANG outside in the parking lot. My wife pulls as close to me as she could and, without really thinking, I rolled over (away from the window) and pulled her onto the floor. Our bed is sitting on it's box spring on the floor, so the fall isn't that far. The bed is between us and the window at the point. I rush into my closet where I keep my HD shotgun and slowly walk towards the window. Once my wits came about me, I realize they didn't really sound like gun shots. So I looked out the window and saw some kids running away.

I'll tell you, after how frazzled I was being woke out of a dead sleep, I know I need to take some training classes. I think I did ok, but if those really were gun shots, my reaction time seemed WAAAAAAAAY too slow.

At least it wasn't the real thing. I actually had that happen just after Christmas.
I was walking my youngest sister out to her car to say goodbye and such when it happened.
My neighbor had just gotten a new rifle, normally no one pops rounds off in my neighbor hood, it does happen but not more then a couple times a year.
Anyways my sister doesn't even flinch as a rifle report goes off a hundred yards away in my neighbors yard. I turn and start to reach for my weapon when I see my neighbor sitting there with a rifle propped up and taking aim away from us. Come to find out later when I talked to him that he had just gotten a new .30-06, and couldn't wait to test it out.
I know not what this "overkill" means.

    Yep..its that time of year.

I thought something blew up last night. Went outside to see fireworks being sent up in the distance. Some of these new fireworks have quite a bang to them.

Guess I'm glad I'm in rural Virginia where these sounds are normal. If I don't hear gunfire I think something may be wrong...

    edit...although 2am is a bit much...

yeah, to tell you the truth, if it were day time I probably would not have reacted the same way. It was just the facet of being dead asleep then needing to be alert and awake...

I think those jerky kids must have cousins here in Golden. There is a house about a block away or so that sets off fireworks around midnight on Sundays every once in a blue moon. Perhaps 5-6 times a year.

In fact, they set some off this weekend.

The last time I heard a gun shot in the night.....it really was a gun shot.

Pcon, I'd say your reaction was quick and decisive.....even if it was only a firecracker.

thanks Patti...my wife and I were both shocked that I reacted the way that I did.

I've heard gun shots before too (in my neighborhood, not just at the range) and these really didn't sound like them. I guess that's what being woken out of a dead sleep will do to your interpretation of stray noises.

The only thing you could do would be send some bottle rockets or roman candles back!!!

I don't care much for fireworks, had something to do with a torch and garbage bag, not a good combo, static electricity is not our friend.

Sounds like you did OK, but why would you want to go to a window, not very good cover???

Id say you did good. Got low. Got the wife low. Knew where the gun was. Was able to get gun. Was able to figure out that the threat really wasnt a threat without killing anybody. From a dead sleep at 2 in the morning? Sounds alright to me.

+1 to HiOctane's comments. Sounds like you got moving pretty fast, and reacted accurately.
Are you just wishing you didn't have to go all the way to the closet for help. . . ? I had a similar false alarm once, where our burglar alarm went off at 3:27 a.m. on a Sunday (yes, it was 1990 but I remember the actual time!) It felt good to snatch a pistol out of the nightstand in 1.5 seconds. (OK, I don't know how quick it really was, but it was quick--at the moment I would have preferred it to be even quicker!)

Had something similar happen to me. I was fueling my lawn mower before starting the hayfeverfest and someone down the street let off a fairly serious firecracker-type firework behind me just as my wife and 9 month old kid was stepping out the front door. I spun towards the sound with my hand going to my Glock grip and saw that it was nothing but some kids messing around down the street.

Scared the beejeezus out of me for a second there, though.
