    HD Scenario

    1. Ammo capacity does not matter...

    2. No rifles or shotguns...

It's 3 a.m. and several armed thugs have crashed in
through your door and windows in a forced entry to
your home with evil up their sleeve.

The armed men have handguns of unknown caliber.

The big question is what caliber do you choose?

I favor the .357 but at the same time the noise and
recoil for follow up shots doesn't seem to make it
    practical.

The .45 is well known for good stopping power.

    Thoughts ???

I can see a .44 special being a good round too.

Any and all calibers welcome.. Lets stop the BG's

A .45 will get their attention really quick...specially in a double tap!!!!
    Dont you think??

    Pointless caliber war thread.

There is no magic caliber that will win the day. Your training, marksmanship and prior planning will make the difference.

I'll take this encounter with two BG's in a different direction. In this case wouldn't a shotgun be a better alternative? I know it would make me think twice about staying in a house with a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun pointed in my direction.

A shotgun with 00 buck is best..but in this scenario no one
    owns a rifle or shotgun.

I agree and am not wanting to start a caliber war.

In fact I could probably defend myself with a 9mm if
    need be.

Aim is everything. You might even get a disabling shot with your kid's 22. Placement matters.

Although, when the 45 talks, people tend to listen. At least until their ears start ringing too much...

I am a bit confused. If it is "several armed thugs" how does capacity not matter? Are they going to let me take a time out to reload? Yes the .45 is known for stopping power, but the .357 magnum is known for better stopping power.

This is a dumb question on so many levels.

The best answer is to use the gun you're most comfortable with.

I'd rather use a .22lr if I know I could land double taps into 2 different bad guys faces before they could react, than a big 44 magnum that I rarely ever use and is 10x harder to control under stress.

My Kimber is always by my side when home, so it will be a .45 caliber (with night sights) welcoming committee that greets home invaders.
The only advantage I see is that I know my home...in the dark...very well. I'll have eight shots prior to a mag change.
Things are going to be might noisy at the retsupt99 household.
You didn't say anything about canines, so I'll throw a 125# Rhodesian Ridgeback into the mix...he's going to help as a BG distraction.

.40 S&W because my G22 is the only handgun I own that has night sights oh, and I really like the .40

I agree with Matt although I would think twice about any round that may over-penetrate into my neighbors home.

    Rethink Choice of Arms

It seems that if this scenario is likely then the homeowner needs to acquire a shotgun. You are asking a question, but eliminating the best answer right off the bat. No handgun will ever be as effective at short distances against multiple attackers than a shotgun.

Your question is akin to asking, "Hey everybody, I want to take my wife and two kids on a road trip to the Grand Canyon this summer so what vehicle should I choose? Oh, by the way, no cars, SUVs or trucks." Hahahaha

If we are limited to a handgun, all the major defensive calibers will work, it is your level of training and skill that will be the biggest factor in attaining a favorable outcome.

I have to admit this comment made me laugh

I just was trying to point out stopping power between
    handguns only.

One of us might be in HD situation one day. I want the
most powerful round available to me at that time (that
    I can handle of course).

For me .357 in a revolver or 10mm in an auto

I want the first shot to put down the BG so, he or his
    friends can't fire back.

If we are talking any/all guns. Heck I would take a nice
12 gauge and load it with 00 buck or have a AR 15
    handy.
