    Counting Sheep

Today was a slow day for work,we had no leaks to fix or maintnance to run,so a couple of my crew and I just rode the streets and looked at the things guys like to look at. (you know, girl watchin)

While we were in front of a stripmall that has always been a target rich area,I started to notice the amount of people absolutley unaware of what was around them! Most were 20something gals walking along TEXTING,head down, shuffling along both hands busy, lost to the world!

I explained the "sheep concept" to my crew, who caught on fast and instead of saying"short skirt @ 2 oclock" the callout went to "lambchop @ 1:00".This went on until we got a leak call, roughly 30 mikes, and we saw no less than 25 sheep!

Have any of yall paid attn to this?

It's very easy to become complacent. This might not be so bad in a crowded parking lot in broad daylight, but.... I bet if you went back there tonight, you would see just about as many people in their own little worlds as you did today.

I've always been a head up kinda guy. Even before carrying. My wife is the most perceptive human being I have EVER met! Now I just need to get her armed. Hopefully we can raise our kids similarly. But, yeah, I see it every time I go out. Folks are lost in their own little space, and think it's a safe, warm, and fuzzy.

I honestly think it boils down to what your world view is. If you honestly feel that people are inherently "good" and it's possible to create some peaceful nirvana on earth, then you treat the world as not dangerous. Then there are those of us that are realists. While the former would be nice, I am actually living in the real world. Evil and bad people exist and it is my job to protect myself and my family from them.

I am also continually amazed how little people notice going on around them, especially from the parking lot...to the mall...in the mall...and back to the parking lot. We already know of all the crime that goes on in parking lots (ripe pickin'), but the keep on grazing.

Talk-radio host Niel Boortz refers to them as "flat-bellies".
I have noticed that early-20's women nowadays seem to go through everyday activities with that cell-phone. When they aren't texting, it seems like 90% of the time they just hold it to their ear. Not talking at all, just walking, glassy eyed and oblivious.

I realize most of us know about the sheep metaphor with regards to most people who are unaware of their surroundings, but what good does it do you to basically look down your nose at them and ridicule them? Does it make you feel better about yourself?

Remember, we were all sheep before seeing the light about situational awareness. Having a permit does not make you better than anyone else, it just makes you more aware.

I just sent this to my wife and our four daughters. My wife is always telling me how much more I see and observe than she does. They need constant reminding, and three of the four are married.

I don't believe that IronMike stated any thing about looking down his nose at the number of girls who have no situational awareness.

    It was just his observation.

He also did not state in his post anything about being "better" than anybody else.

Just because a person has a permit doesn't make him (or her) aware of their surroundings.
