If you get hung out to dry for defending yourself, then doesn't that make the crime problem worse? For example, if I lived in England and I was assaulted/mugged/robbed, I'd defend myself to the end. Then, knowing that for doing so I'm going to get hammered by the legal system, instead of calling the cops to say I was assaulted, defended myself, and they can come pick up the BG, I'd probably just end up trying to find my own escape route. No way would I stick around just to get in trouble, but I'm also not just gonna stand by and be a victim.
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
In the US of A concealed carry has caused the violent crime rate to decline while in some cases, property crime rates have increased. More Guns Less Crime John R. Lott, JR. Table 4.1 pg 52 of the second edition. It will be interesting to see the third edition when it come out this April.
It couldn't be clearer. USA, allow people to defend themselves - crime goes down. UK, don't allow self defense - crime goes up. I have no personal knowledge of the UK, but I wonder how such a great people allowed themselves to come to this. Bless their hearts.
