Depending on the weapon, at least one extra magazine--if I'm carrying my 225 or 239, I'll carry two. Yes, magazines are just a part, and I don't use a magazine for any of my pistols unless I've utilized them several times in range work to test function. However, I also realize that no matter how much I "trust" the functionality of a magazine, it's a mechanical part and sometimes they do not function as designed. With a semi auto, the most common point of failure is the magazine. Followers stick, recoil sometimes shifts positions of bullets slightly and can cause stoppages.
Which is why a fundamental immediate action drill is to strip the magazine in the pistol out, replacing it with your reload. For me, it has nothing to do with shooting to slide lock and needing to reload, it's got everything to do with just keeping the gun running.

in PA yes right now if traveling to New York from PA no..just the stock 10 rounder....the SR9c(Ruger) came out with a stock 10 round mag and a 17 round reload...great for PA but the 17 rounder is illegal in NY...so someday here I need to get a second 10 rounder so I can be good both places with a reload...so right now in NY I just carry no reload.
