    Visiting Michigan, anything I need to know re: concealed carry?

    I already read through the info on handgunlaw.us.

    Anything else I need to know?

    I'm heading out to Detroit to go to the NCAA Frozen Four hockey games. I already know the sports arena is off limits by law. My NY resident permit should be good in the state in general though, and my non-resident PA and UT permits make me OK in PA and OH on the way to Michigan.

    If you are stopped by a LEO....the first thing out of your mouth should be I have a CPL and am carrying. Then ask how to proceed...It will go a long way with the officer more often than not.

    Keepin' it real in the D.

    I have family that live in SE Michigan. I travel there with my sidearm. The laws are very similar to NC where I have my CHP: no places that serve alcohol for consumption, must notify, all the regular issues with schools, federal buildings, post offices, etc. Other than the normal idiocy, they seem reasonable about cc.

    I had to notify two Detroit cops once at the aiport regarding my status. It could be just coincidence, but they were VERY cool about it. I give a thumbs-up to MI.

    Yeah, the no no places are: "a bar or tavern", or any place that does more than 50% of its revenue from alcohol.

    Great. Thanks for the help everyone.

    Do you have to notify if you are a passenger in a car? My buddy is driving us out there so I'm riding shotgun. He doesn't have a permit.

    Yes and no.
    As the law is written here in MI the "primary source" of income cannot be from the sale of alcohol sold by the glass(or bottle) and consumed on the premises.
    That in itself leaves a grey area, for instance, Hooters, sales come from food, alcohol and merchandise. Depending on the location, that could vary from store to store. Excerize good judgement, if it looks like a bar, it probably is, don't carry there. Restaurants that also serve alcohol are another matter. How one is supposed to know the breakdown of an establishement sales is what can cause problems.

    YES

    An attorney/member on a local gun forum said that once a car is stopped, all occupants are "detained" so you should notify as a passenger.

    I believe you only have to notify as a passenger in a car if the officer is addressing you in an official manor. Ask your name, where your from etc.

    Also someone mentioned the sports arena being a no carry zone. They incorrectly said that it was no carry because it exceeded the 2500 person seating capacity. Any sports arena is a no carry zone in Michigan, plus any entertainment facility that seats 2500 or more.
    Yeah, I know, stand there and count the seats then go to the car to get your CCW if you count 2450. Stupid, but it's what we have!

    From the statues;
    No carry zones-

    (c) A sports arena or stadium.

    (f) An entertainment facility with a seating capacity of 2,500 or more individuals that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more individuals or that has a sign above each public entrance stating in letters not less than 1-inch high a seating capacity of 2,500 or more individuals.

    The no-carry zones do not apply to parking lots of these areas. however you should also be aware that if you want to go to one of the casino's near "The Joe" they are no-carry also, INCLUDING the parking lot.

    This is the section that applies to casinos;

    (2) An individual licensed under this act to carry a concealed pistol, or who is exempt from licensure under section 12a(1)(f), shall not carry a concealed pistol in violation of R 432.1212 or a successor rule of the Michigan administrative code promulgated under the Michigan gaming control and revenue act, 1996 IL 1, MCL 432.201 to 432.226.

    The game is at Ford Field and I know that is off limits.

    I won't be going to any bars or even any "bar and grill" type places so I'm all set there. Maybe Applebees or someplace like that which I should be fine in, we'll be in the restaurant part and will order non-alcoholic beverages only. I never drink when I carry.

    I still have to research the laws for driving through PA and OH. This is more work than planning the game tickets and hotel!
