Wife bought a Taurus PT111 9mm and she shoots it very well, but it was to large for her to CC on body or in purse.
I bought a Kel Tec P3AT for a BUG for me.
We went to range and wife shoot a box of ammo through P3AT and looked at me and said "mine".
I bought another P3AT for me, and she carries that little powerful gun everywhere it is legal to carry.
By the way she runs and shoots the gun very well.
As to caliber, I believe there is a difference between a duty caliber for LEO and what a CCer may need on a daily bases.
As a CCer my wife is not out there fighting crime, she is protecting herself from BGs that may assault her or her love one's.
It may take time for you to come the right answer for your carry needs.

Buy your handgun just like you buy shoes...... try it on first if at all possible. Once you find something that "feels right" in your hands, good training will allow you to become proficient with it. It's much easier to learn to shoot a comfortable firearm, than it is to try and make just any firearm feel comfortable.
Would you pay several hundred dollars for a pair of shoes, just on another person's suggestion?
Remember the trade-offs....
longer barrel = more weight
longer barrel = better sight radius
longer barrel = harder to conceal
longer barrel = less perceived recoil
Shorter barrels get the above points reversed, and result in more perceived recoil.

My wife has shot and tried all of my various semi's of various sizes and calibars...Her favorite is her 38 spl hammerless snubbie!
She loves the concealability, simplicity, safety and ease of use. Just point and click!
She carries it in a pocket holster in her purse and it fits in one of the side compartments easily accesible and doesn't flop around.
I would highly recommend it!
I carrie one as well alot of times for the very same reasons.

I would suggest that ANY woman who wants to carry, should try out several different guns. From a snub nosed revolver to small auto & even full size pistols. There is no telling what they will like & be able to comfortably handle.
My wife doesn't like revolvers for carry. When we took a couple of defensive shooting classes her opinion was reinforced when she saw how difficult reloading was for some of the other women.
Others will have different opinions....so just get them to try out different firearms!

IMO if anyone has a problem loading a revolver, there is no way they will be able to load the magazine of a semi-auto. A modern DA revolver is the simplest form of handgun there is.

My wife carries a Seecamp .32 in a OWB holster. I'm having a holster made for her Ruger LCP and she'll probably be using that.

She doesn't carry as often as I'd like, but she's coming around...

My wife's not a forum participant, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind me sharing on her behalf. She's new to CCW and decided on a Ruger SP101 (revolver) chambered in .357magnum...however, she carries it loaded with the lighter .38 special rounds. The .357mag load is for camping/hiking. I wouldn't be surprised if she picked up a Ruger LCR as a more compact .38special option as well. Good Luck...enjoy the hunt for your gun.

My wife went thru several iterations before she found her current carry gun. She started with a Walther PPS, but could not really carry it without a substantial change in her wardrobe. Then she went with a S&W snubbie, but had the same problem. Her current choice is a Ruger LCP, which she carries either on the waist or on the ankle, or sometimes in the pocket. The LCP required the least change in clothes, etc, and she seems pretty happy with it.
All of these choices were hers and she worked it out on her own. I'm a good husband and kept my mouth shut thru the whole process.
