As a resident of NOLA, I can tell you that any place that serves alcohol for consumption on premesis should not be visited with a firearm in tow unless you are looking to get a free tour of the corrections system. This includes Chili's, Outback, Applebee's, and the like. This part of the law leaves something to be desired, however it is much better than spending part of your vacation in an Orleans Parish jail cell. I would recommend reading http://handgunlaw.us/states/louisiana.pdf to get more specific information on the carry situation in Louisiana. You can try to split hairs with the specific meanings of Class A establishments, etc. but the police are less likely to be interested in that when things involve a firearm. If you have the time/resources/money to spend to fight that then by all means, otherwise it is best to avoid any potential issues. That said, I carry daily, without issue, and will disarm in the car before going into an alcohol serving eatery. If I feel like I might need to disregard that rule for my safety then I probably shouldnt be eating there anyhow. I don't agree with the laws, but I abide by them when they are in place.

As for the violent crime/murder rate, it is high. That said, I spend quite a bit of time in downtown areas of the city, such as the French Quarter, CBD, and Warehouse Districts, and have never been harrassed or approached for more than pocket change. As with all places, stick to the well worn paths, and if you don't see anyone in an area, remember that there might be a reason. NOLA is one of those places where one block loads of people are wandering around, and the next there are people getting mugged. Situational Awareness is the best weapon you can have, and you should not venture out without it.

Hey, PiperLambie I just read the article about the shooting on Canal St. Have you seen it? I've posted the article it is Seven Shot on Canal St. This happened yesterday. I used to live there and I tell everyone about its danger. And you should do the same spare some folks the heartache from those savage demons there. You and others who have since need to leave.

At least they appear to be lousy shots in New Orleans:

A few years ago was the last visit I made to The Big Easy. I grew up right between Baton Rough and NO and have many visits there. In a discussion with a State Trooper Capt. (Troop A) I was told (this was 4 years ago) Restruants were OK, just stay out of any bar areas, but bars in general were a big No-No.
He gave me the "If you pay an 'enterance fee' or can smoke in the establishment, don't go in there heeled"
Don't take this as the gospal truth now......it's 'dated' info.

Regardless, to plagiarize Retsup99, The Big Easy is a "two mag town"!
However, don't even bother going if your on ANY kind of diet!

I did see the article this morning. Actually, I went down there shortly after it happened, but didn't even know about it at the time because I went into the FQ from the back. Not to sound insensitive, but after reading the article I was just as curious as to why there were underage people out that late near Bourbon anyhow.

That said, I think that anywhere you live has the potential to be dangerous. The violent crime rate is not healthy in NOLA, but then again something as simple as crossing the street anywhere can be equally unhealthy in certain circumstances. There are many things to enjoy in New Orleans- food and music chief among them- just exercise caution and maintain SA when out (especially late)...but then again we are all advocates of caution and constant SA- NOLA is no exception.
