    Question Concealed plus open?

Bunker's thread got me to thinking. I normally carry concealed while hunting. Do you?

I carry concealed driving to and from the hunt, so leaving my pistol on is something I haven't thought much about except when we needed to go into a ranger/check station (all firearms must be unloaded at the check station). Now that I think about it, there isn't much reason to carry concealed while tromping through the woods with a revolver openly on my belt. I guess it's better than leaving it in the truck, although no one has ever messed with our equipment while we hunt.

Do you carry concealed plus open? Does it make any sense in such a low threat environment? Would it makes more sense to lock my pistol in the truck while hunting?

I kind of mix and match. Sometimes I'm cc while I hunt, other times open but that's usually covered by a jacket so it's still, essentially, cc. But always a sidearm carried and primarily to dispatch a down deer. But we've got rattlers and feral hogs too. I never leave it in the truck since I've known a number of guys that have been broken into while in the field (and lost guns in some cases).

The only thing that worries me is cc in the field and having the game warden write me up for hunting turkey w/something other than a shotgun, deer hunting w/a handgun that's non-compliant in barrel length, etc. It "could" happen but I would expect a more reasonable response.

And finally....I've had experiences with other hunters that weren't all that great. Trespassing scenarios usually end well enough but they can get tense. Everybody has a gun and sometimes the guys are a bit too charged. It never hurts to have backup. And if memory serves, I've never had to deal with these scenarios one-on-one. I think it's always been 2 or more that I've had to deal with.

Concealed. Walking through the brush might scratch it.

Concealed. Plus, even without a permit, I could do it. I have permission to do what I want on the land I hunt on....

When I am hunting, I generally have a few layers on. I may pop my Keltec in one of my pockets, but I will generally have my 1911 open over my jacket as a matter of safety from coyotes, black bears, bobcats and the occasional mountain lion.

It definitely varies depending on what type of land your on, private vs gameland, and what season, like mentioned above during bow season. So if it's not unlawful, I would definitely carry. Like mentioned above, there's plenty of reasons to still arm yourself other than rifle. CC vs OC is too much to get into. I've done both, but on private property. I like OWB when hunting, but typically concealed by a jacket, but very quick access. Where I've hunt, the previous owners have had problems with others coming onto the property and even shooting at them, so I definitely make sure I've got something more than just my rifle. Other encounters of the non-two-legged kind also can be dangerous, and not all of them call for a high-powered rifle to deal with. Definitely carry, if you can, but OC vs CC is up to you.

I don't so much hunt, as check wooded family land for trespassers and just general exercising of property rights. (A small wild pig might be a target of opportunity; feral vicious dogs are the main defensive concern.) There is NO WAY that I will ever feel comfortable leaving weapons in an unattended vehicle, so I will have at least two firearms with me, and all but one, if not all of them, will be concealed, depending on whether I have a long gun with me.

I don't know enough about FL's game laws to address that aspect of things.
