Guns at the Workplace
I live in Virginia. If I am correct, the employer has the right to prohibit firearms in the workplace. I think, in VA, the employer can even prohobit firearms in parked cars in the parking lot.
Would the gun policy have to be in a written contract or something? Does the employer have to explicity let employees know their policy?
What about if the employer does not own the property where the employees work? For example, a company that maintains swimming pools hires lifeguards to work at pools that are privately owned. Would the worker have to get permission from the organization or do you not have to ask unless it is posted or something that you can't bring guns in? Does the employer's policy have any bearing in this case?
You should get an employee handbook spelling out company policy. If it is not in the handbook that you cannot carry your good to go.
Just remember, Virginia is a at will state. An employer can let you go at any time, for any reason.
