Florida and Other Coastal State CCWers
Although I have not been reading this forum very long (maybe 5 months), I don't believe I have seen the following issue addressed yet:
For those of you who boat and/or fish, how do you carry when on salt water?
I have been boating, fishing, and diving off the east coast of Florida my whole life, and continually experience how corrosive salt water is. Even without getting an item wet, the salt air alone can cause extreme corrosion. For those of you that carry and go boating on salt water, do you carry while boating? If so, how much trouble do you have with corrosion? Is a stainless steel revolver the only real solution?

I didn't know shooting fish was legal; I know using dynamite isn't.

I work on the water and the shore/mud flats here in Maine. In the past I've carried carbon steel guns and used leather gear, never really had a problem but I take good care of my weapons and equipment. I've found a few little specks of rust here and there but always caught it early and took care of it.
I recently changed to a new weapon and decided to go stainless steel and use kydex gear and a nylon belt. Easier to care for, less to worry about.
Never forget. Never forgive.

Actually, the way things are working out in the Gulf these days no one needs to worry about corrosion. There's so much oil in the water you could just hang it overboard when it needs lubed...

Glock carried in a fanny pack and stowed in a water tight compartment in center console. Whiped down before and after trip with a silicon gun and reel cloth.

Navy SEALs use Kramer horsehide rigs for their P226 pistols. I reckon I can use the same, or kydex, for my P229 pistols.

Good luck finding one of those these days, if you don't already have one.

For occasional fishing 'day' trips, my Glock is already under a shirt (covered), and I don't really worry about it. On really hot days, the gun may be taken off and put into a backpack...still nothing to worry about with exposure.OMO
"That I cannot do."

Thanks for the help, guys! I just think of how even the best pliers rust out after a few years even with being rinsed and oiled after every outing, and I worry about a firearm doing the same thing. However, based on everyones response, it sounds like this is a non-issue so long as proper care is taken.

I use mink oil on my leather holsters, and strip and oil when I leave from salty conditions. I also have an older Carbon steel slide on my sig and those rust pretty easy. Still no problems if you wipedown and oil everything afterword.
I know not what this "overkill" means.
