Traveling on planes

I live in the Dallas area, but I have to go to upstate NY next month. I'm leery of taking my handgun in my checked baggage so I'm thinking of doing a Fedex package and sending it ahead. I know I can't carry in NY state, but I may be staying in a tent for a few days and won't do it without some protection. Not paranoid, just practical.

Read elsewhere (so double-check) if fly into New York City with your gun, and leave the airport premise to drive outside of the city, can get into trouble. Can't have a gun in NYC (unless have a permit?). And since you declared the gun to the airline before you flew, someone can find out. Trouble happen to a guy whose plane was delayed in NYC so could not continue to his destination and had to spend the night in a hotel in NYC.
