Traveling into Las Vegas by air.

Can I legally possess a handgun while in and traveling through Las Vegas. I plan to arrive by air spend 2 days. Then rent a car and drive to Salt Lake City.
I have a Florida non resident license so I'm legal to carry in Arizona and Utah but not in Las Vegas.
I don't plan to carry the handgun and I'll keep it in a locked case while in Las Vegas.

No problem. You can even open carry, although I recommend that you not wear one in a hotel/casino, as you would be escorted out. Having one in a locked case is no problem at all.

I second Squawker's reply! Just watch yourself while driving through North Las Vegas as they have their own laws on how you transport firearms.

I remember reading somewhere that you have to declare a firearm if traveling by air. I'd also double check with the airline so you don't have problems.

There are dozens of threads here on that subject. Do a search before we need to start another thread on how to take a pistol with you on an airplane. It's actually very simple and quite legal if you follow the rules. The only problems you are going to have are on the ground. Make SURE you know the state laws and your status at each of your destinations.

It's very simple flying commercial with checked firearms. The only problem I've ever had was at a particular big city airport in California where TSA ignorance was the only problem, but I have heard horror stories about Chicago & New York City. I've printed out and placed in a binder, both the TSA regulations and the law pertaining to HR-218, which I carry with me when I travel. The only time I ever travel without guns is when I'm going overseas.

From TSA's web site, "Prohibited Items."

Firearms - firearms carried as checked baggage MUST be unloaded, packed in a locked hard-sided container, and declared to the airline at check-in.
