The Duke
Cops aren't immune to critique, and critiquing them is not being anti-cop. If cops would spend more effort helping to cull out the bad cops and less effort defending them, they'd get less "bashing."
We hold certain groups of professionals to a higher standard because of the critical nature of their job: Cops, surgeons, airline pilots, soldiers. That same rigid standard should have been in place for politicians, and you see the mess we're in when we failed to hold them to a high standard.

Not to mention that the Police are entrusted with the power to enforce the law upon the citizenry. With that power comes the responsibility for Police to live up to that higher standard.
The job is supposed to be "to Protect and to Serve," not a job where you can be "cool" because you're "the man"...
In my neck of the woods, there seem to be far too many "cool boys," and not enough Andy Griffith's Sheriff Taylor types (I do this job because I want to help people)...

My approach to this situation isto politely answer the officer's question, thank him/her for their service to my community and move on.
A little kindness goes a long way!

I try not to pet the new puppy on the head like he did something good after he pooped on the floor. No sense rewarding bad behavior.
