    Now that is priceless!!

I would not have made a big deal if my "gun" was showing. It only fuels the anti people when we make a "Federal Case" when someone asks a lame question like that. We need to show that permit holders are good, decent, law-abiding citizens and no threat unless threatend

How about: Yes I do have a permit, now while you kindly finish getting my Slurpee I'll explain to you what the Second Amendment is.

I might have said, depending on my mood, either "I'll bet you do" or "Oops", but I like your answer MUCH better!

I've had a few "I hope you have a permit" type questions flung my direction before. Generally, I reply with a simple question, such as: "You do realize that any upstanding adult in the state can legally carry, right?" That seems to correct their understanding. In a couple cases, I've gone on to have a fairly decent conversation with the person.

Most recently, a resident alien (from Europe) was surprised to find that most anyone could carry legally, but he did mention that he would be looking into it for himself.

In each case, the softer, informative reply seemed to have some benefit. Can't imagine the in-your-face replies would have gotten as much mileage, let alone having helped anyone to realize that they could carry too.

These encounters have all been while openly carrying.

I know my "thing" is rather large, I use it well and the ladies sometimes say I should have a permit for it, but why are YOU so interested in it?

I would have thanked the guy for noticing my EDC and then covered it over, paid for my goods and walked out the door.

I would say something like.....Ring me up and in your spare time read the US constitution and pay special attention to the 2nd amendment.

That beats my "thanks, what's the damage" by a long shot.

why be rude about it, some of these responses seem a little harsh

Agreed, mine included. It would depend mainly on 2 things: the attitude of the guy asking the question, and my mood.

If he was snotty or condescending, I wouldn't be Miss Manners at all. If he was polite, then a polite answer would be the best reply. In that case, it might be a chance to recruit another gun owner.

End of my long day... condescending attitude from some clerk about my legal activity... I probably won't win any gold stars for my response.

    Sure do.

That said, I have gotten a couple of great comments while OC'ing!

Clerk- "You're not planning on using that are you?"
Me- "Nope, it's not for you."

Tree guy- "You're not going to shoot me are you?"
Me- "No, unless you try to kick down my door?"

Clerk- "Yeah, I know OC is kinda legal."
Me- "Like kinda pregnant? It is or it isn't. And it is."

I've been made while CC'ing. Just not approached.
