    Question For Our Deaf Forum Members Regarding Hearing Protection.

    DeafDave, and other members on the forum who are deaf I have a question. Please do not take it in jest I am being sincere about it. Do deaf people need to wear ear protection to keep from damaging their inner ear? I do not really understand how most forms of deafness work, and I was thinking even though hearing damage is not really a big factor, if one were to shoot a weapon without ear protection, it could mess up their inner ear where the balance center lies. Therefore it got me wondering if you still had to wear ear protection. Thanks, and please take me seriously

    That's an interesting question..... I would imagine a doctor would probably have to answer.

    Not deaf myself but my concern is since the inner ear also plays a big part in balance I'd prefer to error on the side of safety and use ear protection. I request it of all my students and I'd be really interested in a professional insight to this too.

    Thanks INccwchris, another meal for food for thought.

    Not all "deaf" people are actually completely deaf. I have a freind who is considered profundly deaf but when his neighbor works on a motor cycle engine the sound hurts his ears. That said when we worked together in a machine shop I never saw him wear hearing protection unless he was messing w/ someone

    Very few deaf people are actually totally, completely deaf. My son is 25, and was born with a 'profound hearing impairment' -- he's deaf, what most of us hear when standing on a flight line he hears as a whisper. But when we go shooting he wears protection, for three reasons:

    1. Protect what hearing he does have;
    2. No one else at the range would know he's deaf and would question why he's not wearing anything;
    3. It's the rules of the range.

    Of these, the only one I really care about -- but absolutely the single most important reason -- is number 1.
    I'm in favor of gun control -- I think every citizen should have control of a gun.
