I'm from South Augusta area, and I must say, since I left for Virginia in 2008, crime there has gone up. I see a lot in the news these days, almost daily about someone getting shot and/or robbed there. The judge (Judge Overstreet) that shot that intruder in his home with his .380 not long ago, lives a mere half mile from my mothers house (as the crow flies). That's scary.

Every day, here in Portland OR, there are robberies, rapes or murders as well. Though it's at a much lower clip than other major cities in the U.S., Portland's got its share of hoodlums and wanna-be hoods, with a thriving gang environment, lots of drug activity, right along the major West Coast interstate highway.

I always carry. Even if my neck of the woods has lower crime statistics. Carrying is insurance especially if you don't want to move or....that you think that 'it' could never happen here.

In the little town of 1200 or so that I live in there is rarely any reports of crime. However, 15 miles away in the State Capital, Charleston, West Virginia, it's another story entirely. The crime rate, especially drug related crime, seems to have gone up considerably over past years. Charleston has been likened to a suburb of Detroit or Philly.

I carry everywhere that I legally can, and I really don't go anywhere that I can't carry(Except Buffalo Wild Wings or Native New Yorker) so I am carrying all the time...

Crime in our area has gone up in the last several years I am sure due in part to so many being out of work and there being no industry here. I have a 20 month old daughter and am pregnant with my second child so I rarely go out without my husband anymore. (There have been several recent crimes targeting pregnant women or women with small children lately). One of us is Always carrying.

We moved to our present location in Aug. 06. There are two Casinos/card rooms across the street and a bus stop 30ft from our apartment. Since Aug/06 there have been more that 24 shootings with 19 dead and at least that many more that went to the hospital (you never hear on the news what happened to to the wounded). Seattle has a bad gang problem that the city dads don't want to acknowledge or address. So we are left to ourselves for our own protection. At least once a week we have some type of gun violence in the hood. We can't move because I live onsite for the business that I manage. So we're stuck for now.

Gunfighter48, I hear ya. I moved out of Seattle in 1970 and never looked back. 4 years ago sold my place in Maple Valley and moved to Central WA. Still have a studio apartment in Kent for work and it is a real experience.

We get the occasional convenience store robbery and our one and only bank actually got robbed this year. It's always an out of towner that does it. Like NC Bullseye, I only carry where violence could occur.
