In many states, to obtain a CCW or concealed carry permit, you must put an "ad" in your local newspaper notifying the public that you are obtaining a CCW. Therefore it is erroneous to say that the fourth kind of carry-person is the only one who knows about his or her ability/privilege to carry."

That's a new one to me. I doubt it's true but maybe one of you would know more about it.

I don't know about placing an ad in the newspaper announcing your intentions to apply for a permit, but I do know that some papers do print the names of people who have received their carry permits.

Never heard of that before, but I see someone mentioned Delaware as having that requirement. I would replace the term "many states" with "at least one state" or possibly "some states."

I like most of what Lima prints and videos, but attempting to characterize the types of carriers into just 4 specific types strikes me as a bit sophomoric.

Yep...our local rag the Roanoke Times, in their infinite idiocy, printed such a list a while back. They also use their columnists to print as many negative concealed carry permit holder stories as they can fathom. They should call themselves the Anti 2A Times.

Yeah, I was aware of some papers idiotically printing those lists. But the comment about pro-actively taking out an ad in your local paper announcing your intentions to acquire a CCW seems like BS.

It's a requirement for a CCDW permit in Delaware, you have to run an ad in a paper for 5 days, you have to have three property owners sign for you, be fingerprinted and a background check, and they recently added was a class. Permit is good for 3 years, then you have to renew, but that is only paperwork and a check. On the other hand for the HR218 you have to qualify yearly with the weapon(s) you will carry.

Wow...that's ridiculous. Remind me to add DE to my "do not move to" list.

Exactly. Does anyone ever think before making some of these laws?

Many states? It's amazing anyone (even a state bureaucrat) could possible believe such a thing would flush out the criminals who are attempting to carry. Reality is, only a law-following citizen is going to do that sort of advertising anyway, with criminals laughingly ignoring any such requirement. The result? Only upstanding people end up being forced to notify their "neighbors." Which sort of defeats the whole purpose of warning the community in the first place, since (with very rare exception) such people aren't the threat. Dumb x2.

Thank goodness we don't have that possibility here in Arizona.

Not only do the folks writing the laws not have a clue to the consequences at least half of the time, but the others voting in favor of the proposals don't even read the damn things first.

I have been carrying w/ a CHP for 12 yrs. and never had to put an ad. For my first permit, I went to Norfolk Circuit Court to fill out an application that I then submitted to the Norfolk PD (Criminal Records Division) in addition to getting fingerprinted. After that, I got approved in less than a week.
