Problems with Hornady Critical Defense?

No issues from my CM9. What I have found though is if you research too much and avoid every brand or model that you ever hear a fault with you will end up with nothing-that goes for bullets, guns, cars, tvs or whatever. You can drive yourself nuts researching something in hopes of not finding any bad imformation on. I use the same Hornady just because they are easy to find local and have not had an issue so far. Find something that works for you and you are happy with and stick with it. Just my .02.

I have had no issues in my 3904 or Stoeger 8000f reliable, accurate, It's my carry load.

I just shot a 20 round box of Critical Defense .45 with the 185 grain STX loading. 12 of the 20 rounds had primer failures. They all had dimples where they were struck, and all but one fired upon a second try, with one taking 3 tries. They were fired from a Glock 30 that has never had any other ammo issues either before, or the 150 rounds I fired after trying the C.D.

I tried to contact Hornaday via their web site, but their messaging system wasn't working properly.

Not to knock Hornaday, but this shows the importance of actually shooting any round you intend to carry for self defense. It's back to Gold Dots for the fat man!

I tried some in my 380 and they didn't feed very well and were pretty fat around the base of the bullet.

ran a box of them in 9mm w/o problems.

not on my short list of acceptable defense ammo for any of my guns though.

To the OP....... you have an XD ! ! !

I've taken my XD, and we shot every ammo of every type in it, including the cheapest junk around.... it never failed to shoot anything put in it, nor to have any issues of any kind.

I've shot 300 rounds of CD ..... in pickier guns, and no issues at all.

I can't imagine you having a problem with CD in an XD.

100s of rounds of CD thru my three 357 magnums, no issues.

I just spoke with a rep at Hornaday. He was good to talk to and was concerned about the failures. I neglected to keep any of the dud rounds, which would have helped them diagnose the problem. Wish I would have thought about it.

I have only seen FTF's in the ammo in certain guns. The rubber insert would get stuck on the ramp of Beretta's and other firearms I have seen. Never have I seen or experienced any primer problems in the ammo. In my classes I have had at least a dozen students use Critical Defense ammo. After about 300 rounds myself also, not one failure to fire due to primer failure.

Not so fast... the Model 60 I got that is right now back at S&W for repairs says this is not always the case. It won't go through more than 2 round most times without not resetting and locking up. Nothing is "everytime"..

I have not had any issues with HCD in my LC9 and LCP.

Have fed and fired close to 1000 rounds .40 CD of through M&P40c and PPS without one failture to feed or fire.

This thread got me curious so I took my Taurus TCP outside to give it a try. I ran two magazines of the critical defense ammo through the gun and got a FTF on the very last round.

Are you referring to a fail to feed, or fail to fire? I thought FTF stood for fail to feed which I think is different from what the original poster was talking about.

I carry them in my Glock, Ruger and Bersa as does my son in his LCP.... not a one FTF whatsoever, they shoot fine, last a long time :wink:
