Problems with Hornady Critical Defense?
I recently bought some Hornady Critical Defense ammo for my XD9sc after hearing some good things about it. Unfortunately, while looking around on the some other forums earlier I saw some posts saying there have been a large amount of problems with FTF’s due to bad primers. Anybody on here had any bad experiences with CD or heard if this problem has been fixed?

Good to know. I haven't had a chance to test fire any yet but definitely plan on it as soon as I can get to the range.

I had an issue with these but not from primers. there is a bit of a lip at the connection point of the bullet and the casing. that lip seamed to catch on something and cause a FTF. a tap at the end of the slide and the round loads easly. I do not use them in my XD40SC. federial is my choice now.

I carried is in my 709 9mm and had no issues with it. The guy at my local gun shop has done extensive testing with it and has not had any issues....says most of the local police carry it in their off-duty weapons.

No issues here with primers, and I only use it in my Ruger SP101...so no feeding problems either.

I read on this forum that if your primers were gold colored, you were good to go. Apparently the problem was with silver colored primers. I checked mine right away :^D

At my last snub nose revolver class, one student used HCD for the carry ammo test. Out of 10 rounds fired, one simply would not go off. The primer was heavily indented from two strikes but no bang. I purchased a box local to that area and it had gold colored primers, but I don't know what his were.

Out of curiousity, how would a bad primer cause a FTF? I'm assuming your FTF means failure to feed? Or are you referring to failure to fire? That would make sense.

Wow. Everyone's favorite Fad Ammo is having "Issues".
I guess I've been behind the times and a fool for sticking with those old tech bullets...like Ranger T, Gold Dot, HST and Black Hills loadings of XTP.

Blueorb, sorry for the confusion. Yes, I meant failure to fire. From what I was able to find, it was the silver primers that were causing the problem. However, I wasn't able to find if the problem had been fixed by the switch to the gold/copper colored primers.

Just out of curiosity, have you contacted a Hornady factory rep concerning your faulure to fire issue? If so, what was his/her response? Also, if you are having a failure to feed problem with certain factory ammo, I would suggest that you simply employ a gunsmith to polish your feed ramp with a fine jewler's wheel.....a very inexpensive solution to correct a critical problem that could cost you your life in gravest extreme. This solution was offered by the late Jeff Cooper 40 some years ago in his monthly magazine commentary. I took his advice and had the ramps of all my 1911s attended to, and it resulted in the ability of all my weapons to feed even an empty case. Perhaps I have been fortunate, but in the past 44 years, I have never had a "failure to feed" incident with any factory or personally loaded ammo, and I fire on average at least 50 rounds per week. Can I say with absolute certainty that the polishing of my ramps has allowed for such personal success? NO, but in my opinion it hasn't had any adverse effects.

I've had no issues with Critical Defense in my LCP & M&P40c.
