    Flying with a handgun(in baggage)

Sorry if this has already been covered(I couldn't find the thread). Looking to fly back home to GA from NC after driving up with my handgun. I'm an HR 218 compliant retired LEO with both retired ID and GA CCW permit. I have a lockable hardcase for the pistol..just looking to be informed therefore prepared. Any information would be great. THANKS!

Check in and disclose it at the check-in counter, and provide a lock for it, and you should have no problem.

I have done it a couple of times and it is not so bad. You need to check with the particular airline that you are flying because not all have the same rules. Gun must be empty and in a locked case inside your luggage. Ammo needs to be in "factory" box also in your luggage. You simply have to go to the airline ticket counter, declare the weapon, and go through the procedures. However, do print out both the airline and TSA policies because you may run into either an ignorant agent or an anti agent. Good luck and safe flying.

I like the suggestion of printing out TSA and airline policies. It pays to know the regulations.

Another suggestion: Have it empty and open before you get there. You hear a lot of stories about problems when clearing or checking clear, and you don't really want that at the check-in counter.

They should have you lock it in their sight, and then possibly escort the bag to the security checkpoint.

I'm not sure why you didn't find any posts on this subject. It seems we cover this one every other week.

I'm asking the mods to consider putting a sticky on the last thread we ran on this subject because we had comprehensive responses that covered all the bases.

Also, could you please consider also putting a sticky up on the recurring thread about how you can take a dump in a public restroom while carrying. Sheesh....

All point have been hit. No need to beat a dead horse. Just make sure you got all your document in order. TSA has a way of stealing things also so keep this in mind.

Remember to make sure whatever lock you use on the pistol case is not a TSA-compliant lock. Do not give your key or combo to anyone, including TSA staff who may try to hustle you into giving it to them.

I'll add one more thing. Leave yourself PLENTY of extra time !!! One one trip (outbound) I ended up leaving the key to my locked case home so I had to put the gun in my car. On the return flight there was such a big line inside (would have had to gone inside if I had my gun) I would have missed my flight. We are talking over an hour wait to check in inside. Outside we waited about 45 minutes and just about made it to the plane.

I hear that if you're willing to part with a few bucks, the skycap guy(s) outside will take you all the way to the front of the check in line if you tell them you have to check in a firearm. Of course, the tip is optional, but that is what they help you out for.

Traveling with a firearm is really no big deal. TSA agent have had to deal with this for many years, and I have found the process to be quite simple and a 'non-problem'.
    Enjoy the trip.
