    Florida Non Resident Permit

I am a resident of Louisiana and have a CWP issued by LA. Business / Pleasure takes me to FL often, and while I am aware that FL would recognize my LA permit, does anyone see any advantage to me obtaining a FL Non-resident permit, or is it a waste of time and money?

You would get coverage for NM, OH, and DE if you were to get a FL Non-Resident. Additionally, if LA takes a while for the renewal process and you have somewhere to go the FL permit most likely would be valid to cover you until your new permit arrives. However, mind you I dont know what LA would do if your permit was in the process and you had a FL Non-Resident, if LA would recognize or not. Some states you have to have a resident permit and that is all there is to it to carry in your home state. I would say go for it, I feel better with more coverage to be on the safe side.

I think Florida's rationale for the non-resident permit is based on the huge numbers of "snow birds" who spend almost equal time in another state and retain residency in that state. My wife and I keep a second house in central Illinois ( where we are from) but we became FL. residents because Fl. has no state income tax and a valuable "homestead" exemption for residents. We do go back to IL. for the hurricane season and to spend time with the grandkids. On the plus side, the non-res. permit legalizes and to a certain extent controls those who choose to carry outside their home state, on the other hand, it sort of waters down the permitting process which is some states reason for not recognizing a FL. permit.

If Fl recognizes your LA permit, why spend the money? Keep your LA permit current and get non-resdient permits for states that don't recognize it.

Florida's non-res permit offers better than average reciprocity, that is an advantage for travel. Utah's non-res offers the best (IIRC) reciprocity of the non-res permits out there though.

Just to let you know, Florida will not accept a Utah non-res permit but Utah will accept a FL non-res permit. That's why I ended up getting the FL after I got my UT permit.

AZ offer almost identical reciprocity as FL and is a might cheaper at $60.

The way I look it it, if your LA permit will cover you where you go, and inbetween if driving, I see no point of getting another states permit. Myself, I sent in and got my PA non-res permit because I have kids in TX and if my ex-wife does not follow through with our visitation agreement then I may have to go to TX, which is the only state on my route that does not cover my OH permit. If you do not need it, save the money for some ammo or training, but if you need it, get it.
