Oregon Dutch Brothers Barista protects his life from armed robbers

"The Barista who fatally shot a would-be-robber at a Dutch Brothers coffee kiosk in Eugene on Nov 24 broke company rules by taking a gun to work, but that doesn't mean he won't be welcomed back if and when he's ready to return to the job", the company's top executive said Friday.

"Under this unique circumstance, the Barista who went throught this horrific event did everything to protect his own life"

The company has placed the employee on paid leave for a month, and has offered him counselling

They are also working with law enforcement and security specialists on a thorough review of safety guidelines, the no-firearms policy being one of the rules that is being scrutinized

Lane County prosecutors determined the worker would face no criminal charges

Dutch Brothers is a phenomenally successful coffee chain with 150 locations in five states. I'd say they score high marks for their handling of this difficult situation

Sounds like Dutch Brothers is taking its employees safety and welfare to heart, unlike some other companies who are more worried about liability.

If they ever come up with a Sip and Shoot blend I'd buy a pound or two

Good to hear from this company! I don't think there are any around here but I'd certainly patronize them given the option. I hope they remove the "no guns" policy now that this situation has come to light.

Good for them - and good show to the barista. It is always a tragedy when an employee of some chain store/pizza shop etc. defends against BGs and then gets fired. This is a much better outcome.

Because, ultimately, the bad guys should be on notice everywhere that if you try to rob and commit mayhem, a armed citizen will give you lead poisoning.

Wondered how long that story was gonna take to make it here...

I found this funny, in the online obituary the scumbag's family said they would like his death to inspire donations for causes such as gun control

Of course he was a fine upstanding young man (even with a criminal record and was killed while attempting to rob someone). He loved Mom, the flag and apple pie (as well as others property). If we had stronger gun laws he'd still be alive (to rob and kill innocent victims who obey the law).

If I were his family and "friends" I'd be ashamed to post the BS they posted on line!

We would like his passing to inspire contributions to causes like gun control...

Those darn guns, they're always getting in the way of a successful robbery.

I commend Dutch Bros. for doing the right thing, when it would have been easy to fall back on the "company policy" rule, and fire the man. Especially on the Left Coast (though I'm not familiar with this part of OR). They seem to be treating him with concern, respect and fairness. We all should be so lucky.

    Regards,
    Josh

Gimme a break! I see that they didn't mention the proximate cause of the young man's demise

The robber that died in this attempted robber, was a 27 yr old thug by the name of Sirus Combs. He had a long history of just relatively minor crimes, assaults, and drug use before, but he decided to use a handgun in this robbery. There were two robbers, and they forced their way into the coffee stand, opening up the door to the kiosk. Only Combs appeared to be armed. As he entered the kiosk, the barista working there exchanged gunfire with him at very close range. Combs collapsed and died inside the kiosk from multiple gunshot woulds, while his accomplice fled. The accomplice is still at large.

Dutch Brothers has a policy AGAINST employees bringing weapons to work. However, they have decided to not punish this employee in any way. In fact, they gave him A FULL MONTH OF PAID LEAVE OFF, as well as offering to pay for psychological counselling.

Eugene, Oregon is an extremely liberal city, with 76% of the 2008 Presidential vote going for Obama. The Barista has been strongly condemned by many in the city in various local web discussions for killing Combs. Many are describing Combs as being a good person that was loved by many.

I personally cannot criticize this shooting at all. The guy was at work, doing his job. Combs announces a robbery, and points a loaded gun right at the fellows face. The Barista did not fire at the robber until he was inside the kiosk, and almost on top of him.

His only other option was to simply hand over all the cash to the robber.

Here is a photo taken at the scene shortly after the shootout between the two men. While the Lane County District Attorney's office has cleared the Barista of any wrongdoing, no one has said which man fired first. This issue has become a matter of local debate, with critics of the Barista implying that he must have fired first.

But tell me this: does that even matter at all, who fired first? If a man is coming at you with a gun and is only a couple of feet away from you, do you have to wait for the robber to shoot first?? Seems to me that the Barista held off shooting as long as he could.

Yes, Sirus was very well loved by many people in the Eugene Community. He was considered to be a truly great and wonderful person by many.

Here are some of the comments from the Obituary: ( checkout the final note made in the last comment )

    -------------------------------

My heart goes out to one of the most loving families I have ever had the pleaseure of knowing. Sirus IS love, and was an amazing young man on many levels.

To be able to touch the lives of so many, truly shows his decent character. He definately left behind dinosaur sized footprints that no one else can ever fill! His memory will live on in the hearts of many.

Rest peacefully Sirus knowing that you were a person of immense love for your family. I wish them all the strengh to get through each and every day, to be able to smile at each and every memory you left behind.

    -------------------------------------

Sirus was one of the finest, most polite young man that I ever had the opportunity to know. He will be missed so much.

He has the most supportive loving family that ever got to opportunity to know. Sirus you will never be forgotten. I'm so sorry to see you leave so soon. You are a shining light. Love, Garilyn

    ------------------------------------

I love you Sirus....you touched all of our lives. I will be there to say my goodbyes/see you later's tomorrow. As I have said before you were not just special, you were and still are EPIC, an amazing artist, person, soul, human being. If only everyone could be as good as you were.
