    Finally taking CCW class

Now that things have settled down around the house with the new baby (our first, almost 3 months old), I've finally signed up to take my CCW course. Scheduled for this Thursday. Consists of classroom instruction and live fire of 50 rounds up to 10 yds away.

Oh, and did I mention the 3 month wait afterward? Everyone I've talked with that has their CCW permit here (SC) says SLED takes the full 90 days, regardless of how quick/easy your background check is. And I know my background check will go easy based on my current job.

Congrats on the baby & the app. Spend the time waiting by doing things that will further prepare you for carry. Use the time to choose holster. Wear it around the house. Get uset to feel. This time will get you over the "am I printing" worry. Practice access & presentation. Go to the range. It will pass. Glad to see the young parents coming along/.

Mine took the full 90 days, and was mailed directly to me. I thought I was going to have to pick it up at the sheriff's department. The only problem I did have, was they couldn't get my sex right, apparently they have new software, that defaults back to female. I called SLED the next day, the lady I talked to about fell out of her chair, when I told her I didn't ask for a sex change, just a permit. After she quit laughing, she assured me, the system had my correct info and she would have a new permit out to me, with my info corrected. She told me to go ahead and carry, until I received the new permit, I was figuring a week or so, not true, she had a new one in my mailbox 2 days later. I have since then called SLED, for various questions, no matter who I talked to, I was treated with the same respect. Great group of people, good luck with your CCW, and if you have any problems, feel free to call SLED, they seem to be a very gun friendly division.

Well, the course was cake. Anyone with "uncommon" sense could probably pass the written test without any instruction. Instructor asked us to not shoot one big hole in the middle of the target since he had to be able to count a least 35/50 holes in it, so I just aimed at the numbers in the rings (B27 silhouette). Broke down into 12 rounds in the X ring, 5 in the 7 ring, and the rest in the 8 or 9 ring with enough spread that he could count all 50. Shooting test went as follows:

This pattern was repeated at 3, 5, 7, and 10 yards. Only 5 rounds loaded at a time. Each distance got an increase in the time allowed to put rounds on target, so the first round was:

    1 from ready, 2 seconds
    2 from ready, 3 seconds
2 from ready, 3 seconds, reload

1 from holster, 3 seconds, reholster
2 from holster, 5 seconds, reholster
2 from holster, 5 seconds, reload

At 12 yards, put all 5 on target in 10 seconds from holster, reload.
At 15 yards, put all 5 on target in 12 seconds from holster, clear.

I must have been nervous with someone looking over my shoulder, because I caught myself flinching during some of the rounds, and I don't normally do that when practicing at the range. All in all, a good experience. Now i just need to wait, then look into other states non-res permits.

Sounds good. I get nervous when I know someone is critiquing me too. Not to bad, but I feel it inside.

P.S.- I have a good friend from Ladson. Didn't think I'd meet anyone else from there.

Congrats. BTW, you'll be caught off guard when it shows up. Mine came in a plain envelope, didn't even say SLED on it! It took about 60-70 days to get mine I believe. Maybe you'll be along those lines.

    Congrats

Congratulations on your successful course and test.

A few permits do tickle out faster than 90 days. However, 90 days is the norm. Your permit will come to you in a plain white envelope. No letter or anything else, just the permit. Remember the pictures you had to send in with your forms and monies. Well they take the picture from your drivers license and use it on your permit.

Also, thanks for your support in getting the SC Governor to sign the latest handgun bills.

    Again, congratulations.
