Arrow Question about CCW Application in Texas

I have two questions that sombody might be able to give me insight on.

#1 I took my CHL class two months before my 21st birthday and I sent my application about a month before my 21st birthday. My CHL instructor said that it takes 60 days, and that I would probably be alright sending it in about a month early. So, my question is, if a month was too soon, do they reject the application and make me redo everything, or just wait to send my license?

#2 Do they really take the whole 60 days to process the application?

I know the first question is kind of long but I just had some second thoughts after I sent it in. I read that because I'm military, in Texas I can get my CHL when I'm 18, although I can't buy a handgun until I'm 21.

When I sent in my paperwork on April 3, 2006 it took about 56 days I believe to get my license in the mail. When I called to check on the status they told me that they were about 1 month behind. So at that point they were processing the March apps well into April. I would think you would be OK. You should be getting a letter in the mail that gives you a PIN number that you can use to check the status on the DPS's website. You can always send them an email too. When I did I received a reply within a couple of days.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks Rug. I sent them an email requesting a PIN because I wasn't sure if I got one automatically. I'm hopingt to have my license by the end of August at the lates, but we'll see how it goes.

My instructor said it was ok for me to send mine in one month before I turn 21, he has written alot of the legislature reguarding TX chls so I trust him. I took my CHL class 6 months before. And my brother-in-law's chl hasn't come in yet but it has been around 8 weeks. A friends took 8 months here in Texas.

Please don't be mad, but I honestly got my TX CHL in 26 business days. And I never received my PIN in the mail. That was September/October of 2004.

My wife's CHL app was received by the state one month ago, and she received her PIN in the mail about three days ago.

A close friend of mine received his CHL about two months ago. His wait was 50+ days.

I believe that the amount of time can be dependent on many factors including: criminal/medical background, how many times you've moved, student loans status, payment history with child support (if applicable), and if you share the same name with a "person of interest" to law enforcement. Good luck!

My son took the course a couple of months before he turned 21. He was told by his instructor that he could not send in his packet until after his 21st birthday.

He called DPS a month before his birthday and was told the same thing.... wait until the 21st birthday.

As to your question about your packet's status if you sent it in early, I really do not know if they would make you re-apply or not. You might just give them a call and check on status. One rule of thumb when calling them on the phone.... be very polite and things work much better !

I got mine the 59th day after I mailed it. My wife is now "on the clock" as of last week.
