    Traffic Stop Today.

Since everyone likes to share their traffic stops I thought I'd share mine.

    First traffic stop of 2011

I have the day off and I'm house sitting for the grandparents while they're on vacation so I took a drive down to the store to pick up some food, on the way back I pass a Clark County Sheriff going the other way, she flips a U-turn, right then I knew it was my lack of front license plate.

I pull my wallet out before she even lights me up so I don't have to reach for it with her there, she lights me and I pull over, flashers on, windows down, keys on dash and hands on wheel. She approached more slowly and cautiously than I believe most police do.

LEO: What are you up to today?

Me: I just went to Fred Meyer to pick up some food and I'm on my way back.

LEO: Do you have a driver's license, registration, proof of insurance?

Me: Yes Ma'am (I grab my wallet and hand her my license) and say "Just so you know, I have a concealed pistol license and I'm carrying" as I hand her my CPL.

    LEO: Where is the gun?

Me: In my waistband, right side.

LEO: OK I'm going to ask you to place your hands on the steering wheel.

    Me: OK.

LEO: Any other weapons in the vehicle?

    Me: No ma'am

LEO: Where is your registration and proof of insurance?

    Me: In the glovebox

LEO: OK slowly reach over and grab them.

    Me: OK

LEO: I stopped you because of no front plate.

Me: Yeah I figured that was why.

LEO: Any reason for no front plate?

Me: I built that bumper over 3 years ago and just never put it on.

LEO: Have you ever been stopped for it before?

    Me: No ma'am.

LEO: OK, I'm going to go back to my car, keep your hands on the steering wheel, I do not want to see them leave the wheel.

    Me: Yes ma'am

    She returns.

LEO: OK, No ticket today but you should get a plate on this thing.

    Me: OK

LEO: I appreciate you telling me about your concealed weapon

    Me: No problem.

    LEO: Have a nice day.

    Me: Thank you.

Overall not too bad, certainly not my worst traffic stop to date, I'm still ticket free so I'll chalk it up as a win.

Wow, a front plate is required in Utah as well, but only a secondary offense. I didn't know it was a primary offense anywhere.

Good encounter, just curious, could you see any stars above her name placard? She sounds like a newb.

I didn't look. Age wise she appeared to be later 30s, early 40s.

Not here in West Valley where I work, they WILL pull you over for no front plate as a primary offence, it happened to a coworker of mine a few weeks ago when he went to get lunch. I personally don't run a front plate as it interferes with the air flow through my intercooler, so I am running the risk.

He should have called the officer on it.

    From Utah State Code:

41-1a-404. Location and position of plates.
    (1) License plates issued for a vehicle other than a motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer shall be attached to the vehicle, one in the front and the other in the rear.
    (2) The license plate issued for a motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer shall be attached to the rear of the motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer.
    (3) Every license plate shall at all times be:
    (a) securely fastened:
    (i) in a horizontal position to the vehicle for which it is issued to prevent the plate from swinging;
(ii) at a height of not less than 12 inches from the ground, measuring from the bottom of the plate; and
(iii) in a place and position to be clearly visible; and
    (b) maintained:
    (i) free from foreign materials; and
(ii) in a condition to be clearly legible.
    (4) Enforcement by a state or local law enforcement officer of the requirement under Subsection (1) to attach a license plate to the front of a vehicle shall be only as a secondary action when the vehicle has been detained for a suspected violation by any person in the vehicle of Title 41, Motor Vehicles, other than the requirement under Subsection (1) to attach a license plate to the front of the vehicle, or for another offense.
Like I said, it's a secondary offense in Utah.

Sounds like things went well to me. Good job making sure she knew you were a GG. I'd get a front plate on that thing, she gave you a free pass. Hate to waste that.

In other news, we don't need front plates in OK.

    I didn't look.
I always look. I'm HORRIBLE at remembering verbal stuff. Typically the LEO introduces themselves name and department first thing, and I never remember it. But if I can read it on their shirt I'll remember it.
I think it's always good to get their name, afterall, they are getting my ID.

    Glad it went well.

I always find it funny how police talk in 'future tense' so much. "I'm going to ask you to... " So officer should I wait until you ask me?

Even my Uncles who are all retired now (one is a retired Chief), used to joke about it. Officers calling in tag numbers "Ok, that's gonna be {insert tag}..." Well is that what it's 'gonna be', or is that what it is right now?

I'll just say 2010 was a bad year for me and leave it at that

I have been stopped once before in my Dakota for no front plate but that was Memorial Day weekend 09, figured it was just a fishing stop to see if I was drinking. I'm currently driving my Bronco II because the Dakota is down, normally it sits 95% of the time.
