Detroit Auto Show - no weapons of any kind!

This is one of the times I'm really glad I'm a 4th degree black belt, as is my spouse. We're going to the auto show tonight and so will have to pass through a metal detector. Obviously this means not only no handguns, but no blades or extendable baton or even mini-maglite (items I am known to keep handy).

So from the parking deck to the show and back, I'll have my brain, hands and feet (and my wife's as well of course) to defend my family in downtown D.

Well - we do it every year but it STILL bugs me.

Downtown Detroit precinct is the safest place in the city, granted, but that still doesn't say much.

Once we come out and go to Greektown for dinner, I'll strap up again but Geez!

Just Googled carbon-fiber knives - have to get me one of those - no metal detector worries.

Get a Cold Steel City stick for your slight limp. TSA approval, carried all over Europe, and no one looked twice, except a Docent in a Museum in Nuremberg, who then took us on a private guided tour. It created quite the stir in some places, and we got "accelerated" admissions in certain museums. The Louvre, the D'Orsay for two.............

our state CPL law makes it illegal to carry in a venue that is rated to hold, or should be known to hold by the CPL licensee, more than 2500 persons. so this isn't unique to the auto show. it's cobo / joe louis/ comerica park, etc. so even if they didn't have metal detectors, it would be illegal to carry at cobo hall.

To me Cobo Hall is questionable I would check into it some more. Cobo Arena would be off limits but I donít know about Cobo Hall. Michigan law doesnít state occupancy but seating provisions. Last time I was at Cobo Hall they didnít have 2500 seats setup somewhere and Cobo Hall is classified as a convention center not a Entertainment facility.

An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

I was just about to post the same reply. during the auto show I doubt there is more than a few hundred places to "Sit" inside Cobo. (unless maybe you count the car seats)
As far as the metal detectors that may prevent you from bringing a gun in, but as someone else said, maybe a carbon fiber knife or a synthetic baton.

i think the law refers to fire marshal "seating" capacity. cobo hall (center) can be setup in various configurations, but the whole hall proper does have capacity of more than 2500 since it has 700k sq ft of floor space.

My very thought. The xl walkabout stick is also very good.

Okay - so there were no metal detectors, except by one particular entrance. How stupid is that? Last time I must have picked the "wrong" entrance I guess. So we had a fun walk from Greektown Casino parking deck to Cobo Hall, 8 city blocks in downtown D, about 12 degrees F. Of course nothing happened, Downtown Detroit is the safest place in the city, especially during the auto show. You can't spit without hitting a cop or a cadet (not that I tried). I think it was too cold for even panhandlers, much less street thugs. On the way back we rode the monorail (People Mover) back to Greektown and had a nice dinner at the Pegasus. No excitement, of the criminal kind anyway.
