I'm torn between a Glock 23 and a S&W M&P 40c for an everyday carry gun...I've shot both and own a Glock 22 but it seems a little big to carry...I was wondering if anyone knew which one would be a better purchase...any help would be appreciated
I like them both, I like the Glock More. I EDC a G-22 with no issue at all, good belt + good holster + Golck 22= the gun I would choose to fight with if I had too....
Since you have the G22, you have mags that can hold more rounds than the G23 mags. They are useable in the G23 if you wanted to carry one as a spare in a belt pouch. You don't get this benefit with ths Smith. Other than that, it seems like a wash to me.
I find it strange that you feel the 27 is to small but not the 40c. They are basically the same size. When comparing the 23 and the 40c your comparing a compact to a sub compact. Comparing the 27 to the 40c is comparing a sub compact to the sub compact. The only think I can think of is that you tried a 40c that had the mag with the finger extension on it which you can get for the glock 27 but isn't stock.
Love my G23. I've been carrying it since 1997. I did trade up from a Gen 2 to a Gen 3 this past year. The right holster & belt make ALL the difference. I finally went with a IWB Comp-Tac Spartan. It almost makes the pistol disappear. Crossbread has a strong fan base also.
Crossbread has a great video on their home page showing how this style of holster works so well. (You'll want to see the vid with the young lady demoing the holster. If you see the one with the guy, just refresh your page & the other video will come up.)
While I find the M&P points a bit more naturally than my Glock 30, it apparently doesn't cause any accuracy issues (for me). If you shoot the G22 well, then the G23 would seem to be a natural step down in size, retaining the use of the higher-capacity 22 mags if needed.
Glock. And I only say that because you already have the one. The longer I am involved with EDC and defensive shooting the more I see the sense in staying in the same platform/family/type, whatever you call that.
But then again variety is the spice of life, maybe you would fall in love with the M&P, then ultimately go that route.
You say that you shot both. Which one did you like the feel of? I personally would go with the M&P with those two choices, but that is me. Both are fine weapons and ultimately you need to purchase what felt the best for you.
I carry a G23 every day and am super happy with it. The great thing about Glock types is the selection of holsters. Also, I carry a G22 mag as my second mag. My step pa has an M&P9c. It is also a great gun, but the holster selection is hardly as good as that of a Glock.
I agree with Rollo...before you rule out the 27, try it with a Pearce grip base plate. Unless you have extremely large hands, it is easy to grip yet doesn't make it harder to conceal.
I have a 22, 23 and 27, but I mainly carry the 23 or 27. My accuracy hardly deviates between any of them out to 7 yards. I can really tell a difference at the end of an all-day carry...the fully loaded 23 is slightly heavier that the 27.
I carry the G22 for my duty weapon (Sheriff) and the G27 for my off duty weapon. I think that you should stay with the Glock 40 because your G22 mags will fit into the smaller frame Glocks, G23 & G27.
Before you throw out the G27, I would look into the Pearce grip base plate. This will give you about the same grip size as the G23 with a shorted barrel length. I have one on one of my off duty mags, but I find that for concealed carry, the stock mags work better for concealability. I still qualify with it twice a year and score in the upper 90% range thru the qualification course. It just takes a little practice wrapping your strong hand little finger under the bottom of the grip.
I think kinoon gave you some good advice...get a PPS in 40 S&W. It's got all the firepower of the aforementioned guns but in a thinner more concealable form. Second choice would be a Glockk. I just think the reputation and service of Glock is second to none. Also on the Glock you get polygonal rifling that makes more efficient use of the powder translating into slightly greater velocity and accuracy. But if you go Glock, the difference in FPS between a G23 and G27 is so negligible (~50 fps) that there's really no reason to justify the larger bulkier G23 in my opinion. If you are worried about it being too small in your hands, don't be. After putting a Pearce PG26 grip extension on it, you will be able to get a full grip with all your fingers that is just as comfortable as a full size Glock and doesn't compromise concealability or weight.
Since you are familiar with Glocks, I'd stay with it, but I'd strongly recommend the Glock 27 with a +0 Pierce grip extension. Put a Glock 22 magazine in your pocket as a reload.
I have a Glock 19 (same size as the 23) that I used to carry. Bought a Glock 26 (same size as the 27), fitted it with the +0 Pierce grip extension and haven't carried the 19 since. The 19 can be concealed, but not as well, or as often as the 26, at least on my body (5'8", 170 lbs). I score better in the first two stages of the IDPA classification match with the 26 than I do with the 19.
Thanks for all your advice...just got back from the store and the guy gave me an awesome deal on the Glock 23/and a good holster...thanks for all the input guys
There is no way any of us can possibly know what works for you. Find a pistol you want and which works for you, and choose that one. If you are into Glox, and want a smaller package, try the model 27 in .40 S&W
The Glock 23 is an excellent choice. I don't say this solely because I have one but I think it's easy to conceal and it doesn't weigh too awful much. I'm of the mindset that you should stick with a caliber that you're used to and that you already carry. The Glock 22 would be a great choice for carry as well. Either way you made a great decision. Just make sure you practice, practice, practice. Carry the way you practice and practice the way you carry!!
