Shot Fired in my Backyard...
This happened during the third quarter of the Super Bowl this year.
We were watching the game when my father in law comes out saying that he heard on our scanner, "Man with rifle at **** main st."
I'm thinking that's pretty close to here?......
BANG!!!!!!
Yep.....pretty close.
....like backyard close.
Immediately I turn off all inside lights and turn on all outside lights.
I grab my AR, and hand Father in law a shotgun.
(My wife and I were already carrying but, rifle > handgun)
Then we sit in the dark and wait........... and wait.
Then lots of police cars start to show up (which is an event in itself being that our town only has 2)
Finally the scanner says they have him in custody.
Turns out to be a guy fighting with his girlfriends father, and had some other "personal problems". He grabbed a .35 Marlin and went outside....fired one shot reloaded to capacity and was intending to kill as many cops that showed up as he could then shoot himself.
Turns out his plan sounded good in his head, but not quite as good when the cops actually got there. He gave up without much resistance.
Funny how that works?
It happens even in a one redlight town.

Just how big of a cop-killing spree could he have in mind with only two squad cars? And you're monitoring the two-car police band?
This is a little town in NC, isn't it.

There ended up being about 5-7 police cars actually show up total. And the State troopers were on the way but he gave up before they got there.
and no... not NC

You handled it well. Prepared yourself and everyone in your home, but stayed inside and didn't go looking for it. Well handled. Glad no one was hurt.

I thought this was going to be one of those "shots fired in celebration" threads...
Glad it ended well. Hope the guy gets some help while he cools off in jail.

He should be institutionalized, but not in jail. This guy needs a padded cell. At least he wasn't insane enough to actually precipitate a gunfight.

Thanks for the laugh. Still, the situation sounded pretty serious and I'm sure the guy had visions of TV shows and movies in his mind.
