Gerald Ung: NOT GUILTY!
Some of you may recall the case of Gerald Ung. He was forced to shoot in self defense during an incident that occurred in Old City Philadelphia early last year. There was a thread at the time, but I can't find it now. He was charged with attempted murder, among other things. The trial began last week, and went to the jury today. Not Guilty! I'm sure the guy's life is pretty much ruined, but I'm glad he doesn't have to deal with this part of it any more.

Edit:
Here's the first story I saw about the shooting. It includes the surveillance video footage of the incident.

Found the old thread, but it's closed now.

I'm sure Mr. Ung has legal bills somewhere in the six figure range, and would greatly appreciate any donations to his legal defense fund.

Glad to hear this. I had wondered about what happened. It shouldn't have been charged, let alone gone to trial.

Kind of makes you wish the criminal code required the state to pay your legal bills and any lost wages (both backward and forward looking for a reasonable time plus making up any differential from what you could have made if you cannot find work at your prior salary) if it looses. As it stands now, the DA has little to loose by bringing a bad case to trial.

If he was cleared criminally does that also mean he can not face civil suit. Not sure about PA Law but I believe they can still sue this guy for medical and damages. More lawsuit, lawyers and MONEY.

GREAT POINT! I have said for years, nothing good comes from going to bars. Nothing good comes from being in a crowd of people who have been drinking, even if you have not been drinking. Being out late in a city in the bar areas is not something I will do because you can be swept up in a moments notice into a situation where alcohol fueled mass stupidity takes over. I will not put myself into that situation.

Any idiot can see by the by the footage he should have never been charged. Cases like this should at least get the district attorney fired

This is exactly what the law should allow. We could drastically cut back on idiotic law suits if this were the case. Fair is fair.

Congrats, but I hope Mr. Ung also remembers not to "exchange words" and escalate situations. Just leave. No use in arguing with drunk d-bags.

I wonder if Ung did 'escalate' things at all? Does anyone know? I would guess the jury thought he did NOT escalate. Anyway, congrats to Ung.

The original video has no sound but it looks like he (Ung) was getting the heck out of dodge.... and was confronted aggressively then lunged at. I would have shot too.... even with that Video it went to trial??? more to do with who the family is than justice I suspect.... So we put this man who defended himself through a lot and spent a ton tax payer dollars due to the hot head being the son of Center City lawyer Edward J. DiDonato and the nephew of city Republican leader Michael Meehan.
and I would like to note he is probably somewhat lucky it was a .38............. and I bet he is a bit calmer in how he deals with people now too.......
